Re: At 'Em Arizona Fans!
There is one picture of an Arizona observation aircraft that has been posted many times. It has the number 1-O-3 (the 1 for VO squadron 1, the O for the role of Observation and the 3 for the third aircraft) on the fuselage side forward of the tail. Since at that time battleships were authorized three aircraft, would the others have been numbered 1-O-1 and 1-O-2?

Hi Jay,
He has only done these in 1:200 scale. I'm not sure if anyone else has done it in 1:350. If not you could ask Ernie if he'll do some. He's going to probably need a master to work from.

Re: Hobby Boss 1/700 USS Arizona, OH BOY, Need help.

I recived the Hobby Boss 1/700 USS Arizona as a gift and I was taken back a bit by the kit. I enjoy scratch building and I'm a firm beliver of no such thing as a bad model. Some just need a bit more care. I have another project on the bench right now and will be starting the Arizona in about a mounth. I'm not going to go out and get the Dragon kit and can this one. I do enjoy the challange.
So this is what I have so far.
1. USS Arizona kit
2. PE set from TMW for the kit and should work. It lists the Mini Hobby kit for the PE, but if you take a good look at both kits, they are the same tooling.
What else do you guys think I need? I have a great work shop and all the needed tools and paint (I don't airbrush at all, Rattle cans and detail brushes and I'm fine with it)
I did notice a bit of a lip around the main deck. Should that be sanded off or is it OK to use that as a reffernce for the side rails. They will sit to high if you put them right on top of that ridge. I do know the plastic railings around the gun shields need to be removed.
Any help would be great.
Sam
I would suggest taking a look at the Eduard PE set for this kit. I'm still amazed that Eduard put so much work into a set for this kit.

Re: At 'Em Arizona Fans!
I guys I am back, with a new nick...
I am building the 1:200 Trumpeter kit.
I want to portray her in early 1941.
Just wanted to make sure what piece represents the radar platform that was not fitted yet, in that timeframe.
Is that piece D26 ? If yes I suppoe D29 has to go as well, correct ?
Besides I am going to try to represent her underway, waterline, in moderate seas.
Just leaving off the lower hull part seems to let the ship ride too high on the water, since i reckon the upper/lower level split is aproximately (I would say but do pls check I do not have plan) at the level of the red/black demarcation line on the lower hull.
Am I correct ?
thx to all
nice to be with you guys again

Re: At 'Em Arizona Fans!
Going from memory, I beleive that the bottom of the kits upper hull does in fact represent the bottom of the black boot stripe. I think the top part of the boot stripe should be at the bottom of the square rectangles at the bow and stern that represent some 'thing' for water discharge mybe for pumps or something similar.

Re: At 'Em Arizona Fans!
There are many more pictures of this model earlier in this thread. Check shortly after December 7, 2007. I believe that was when this model was unveiled as the first model showing the newly revealed 5-S version of Measure 1. I think the pictures were posted in early-to-mid 2008. Did you notice the figure of Admiral Kidd standing on the Starboard side of the Bridge?

Another comment on the Arizona color in December:
On pages 226-227 of Stillwell's book, he is discussing the collision between the Arizona and the Oklahoma. The is a paragraph about Aviation Machinist's Mate Thrid Class Milton Hurst who returned from a class on the East Coast about the change in color. Instead of light gray overall, it was now dark gray (not blue) up tp the level of the bridge. If he was correct, would it really be painted again before the beginning of December?

Re: At 'Em Arizona Fans!
If you believe the interview with Mr. Bruner who was part of the ships paint crew, they had repainted the Arizona from the waterline up to the gun turrets at the time of the attack. That's the best piece of evidence I've seen to date. As I mentioned previously I'm thinking very seriously about painting her that way. It may not be pretty but it would be respectful to the memory of Mr. Bruner.sixman wrote:Another comment on the Arizona color in December:

Re: At 'Em Arizona Fans!
Photo I'd been meaning to post for a while - lacking in detail, it will show at least that the director foundation inboard of the (empty) aft 1.1" gun tubs was raised above the deck level. The deck of the tub is awash, yet the top of the foundation is visible. Height? Rivet detail or access doors? We don't know, but it gives the modeler a starting point. Also note the hole in the center of the birdbath .50 cal AA tub for access. I suspect there would have been a hatch or some sort of small chain railing as well.
Details, details.
Details, details.

Re: At 'Em Arizona Fans!
Thank you for the pic Tracy. Is that an enlargement of a scan and if so, what was the date of the photo. BTW, guess I don't have to worry about painting the horizontal surfaces of the tops and platforms 5-D or another color like what is seen on Nevada in the Japanese attack photo. Also, what is the round object just to the upper left of the birdbath? Is it a hatch from the second level of the top?

Re: At 'Em Arizona Fans!
December 10th; it's from the same series of photos as this shot.
Yes, that's a hatch; you can see one on each side of this Navsource photo (a bit over 1/3 of the way down on this page). It also shows up in the Chesley and FDD plans, I believe.

Re: At 'Em Arizona Fans!
Actually... it looks to me like the deck inside the birdbath is the same shade as the arm of the searchlight platform below it (the bottom and sides of which we know were painted dark), both of which are darker than the lip of the birdbath splinter shield - though not as dark as 5-D, and probably not as dark as 5-S, either. I would suspect it's a weather-faded brown linoleum up there.Jon C Ryckert wrote:Thank you for the pic Tracy. Is that an enlargement of a scan and if so, what was the date of the photo. In response to the question about the radar platform parts. The overhaul during the Nov 1940 - Jan 1941 timeframe at Washington added the platfrom (at least according to the Stillwell book). So if you are modeling the Arizon in early 1941, the radar platfrom and pedestal should be included.

Re: At 'Em Arizona Fans!
That overhaul changed a lot on the superstructure, but the radar platform on the forward fighting top was not added until fall of 1941
This photo on January 1941 at the completion of the overhaul (from this Navsource page) shows that the platform has not yet been installed. A photo of her in David Doyle's Arizona book (Squadron) on page 86 (upper left, dated August 11) shows that it is not present. I don't have my materials with me right now to see if it shows in the November drydock scan.

Re: At 'Em Arizona Fans!
My error on the radar platfrom. I was trying top recall what I read from the Stillwell book without having on-hand.
On to anoter question (which may have been answered before). The Trumperet 1/200 model has the deck laid out with the deck butt seems staggered only two planks wide instead of four planks as seen more often. Was the two plank stagger correct for the Arizona or is the deck incorrect. Also, the ArtWok has the two plank stagger, but it looks like the KA deck has a four planl stagger.

Re: At 'Em Arizona Fans!
Two-plank stagger would be incorrect for most of the ships out there and is definitely incorrect for Arizona.

Re: At 'Em Arizona Fans!
Since the two plank stagger for the butt seams is incorrect, what have others done to fix this? are the seams filled in to obtain the correct four row stagger and rescribed as needed? Is the incorrect stagger ignored? Is a wooded deck with the correct stagger used (or planked by hand)?
