Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
I have noted a few modellers remarking that they are going to cut their full hulls down to waterline and are purchasing new Dremels to cut them down with. I would advise that if they buy a new Dremel, fine, use it for general model work. Just don't use it to cut injection moulded hulls as the heat generated will melt the plastic, clog the blade and the cut. I hold my hulls in a vice with wood packing outside and in and use a cut down hacksaw blade to cut along a pre scribed waterline. Slow and easy and you have complete control of the cut and can keep withing the bounds that you set out and therefore prevent any mishap by veering away from the intended cut, which will entail an unintended repair.
I have waterlined my PoW and I am about to do the same to a KGV. I did a waterline cut to the recently released Dreadnought. Repulse and Hood fortunately are able to be built in both full hull and waterline configuration.

I`ve used a dremel on several builds to remove the lower hull, and provided I did only do small areas at a time I have no problem with the plastic melting too much.To me its far better than using a hacksaw blade, and a darnsight quicker!

What is the purpose of the two large booms at the front of the superstructure beneath the bridge angled at 45 degrees?
You can see them clearly in this pic of Anson:

Thanks!

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
Those are 40ft loading derricks, used to load ammunition on board. You'll notice that all battleships had a few sets of these derricks about. On deck you'll find a few more booms and derricks. Haven't studied the KGVs that closely, but the QE's, Hood (and probably R-class as well) had a sets of 30ft6" and 50" booms for disembarking/typing up boats plus a host of smaller derricks (paravane derricks, other loading derricks, booms for the sounding device). Prior to KGV and the modification of the HMSs Warspite, Valiant and QE, hoisting the boats was done with the main derrick. This main derrick was replaced by cranes for these ships. All derricks were not tapered.

Thanks for that on the derricks.
My wood deck has just arrived, so I can continue on the KGV.
Have hull, main superstructure done but not fitted, all Brass guns fitted, am really enjoying this build.
The PE is comeing together too.
Thease threads are a great help to us landlubbers who like ships.

Yes, thanks for that. The derricks in the kit look a little thick, so I am cutting a new set out of slightly thinner plastic rod.
Moreover, I lost the kit parts, so there you go.

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
Hi guys
So I'm in the middle of building my first ship, my first model after some years of abstinence. It's the Tamiya 1/350 KGV.
I've read this forum from start to finish, spent two days looking online and still cannot find any good pictures or illustrations of the camo scheme depicted on the side of the box (The blue, blue and grey scheme).
I know this has been asked multiple times in this thread and multiple answers have already been given, but any links provided in those answers do not seem to work anymore.
What I am after is something along the same lines as shown for the PoW on the forcez site for both side views of the ship.
Would very much appreciate any assistance that doesn't involve buying a book.
Many thanks in advance.
Andy

Hi
No not for PoW, for the KGV itself. The forcez website provides two very good illustrations for the PoW, I'm after something similar for the KGV.
Thanks in advance

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
I am gathering information and materials to build Tamiya's P.O.W as K.G.V circa May 1941 including some of WEMs excellent UP launchers to replace the turret pom poms but I have no idea as to the form or approx dimensions of the "tubs" that these beasts appear to have sat in, can anybody help?
I am also horrified at the plastic crane jibs supplied with the kit especially since I have just finished Academy's Warspite with its excellent P.E jibs. As an O.A.P on low income I am reluctant to buy WEMs "Ultimate" KGV P.E set just for the crane jibs especially since I get the feeling that some of the rest of the set would not be needed for this ship in this time frame. Does any body know of a cheaper, more basic P.E set that includes half decent jibs?
Thanks in anticipation.

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
Bit unconventional here but I am answering my own post!
Quite by chance last night I found an old Airfix 1/600th KGV I made about 20 years ago complete with UP tubs which I should be able to scale up and reproduce using 20 thou plastic sheet. Anyway, I'm going to give it a good try.
I have also had a bank statement showing that I am a smidge richer than I thought so the WEM PE set is within my reach and will be ordered as soon as I have finished this post.

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
Here`s a quick question: What colour are the catapult deck floor areas on P.o.W?
I bought a Pontos deck for my 350th tamiya kit, but can`t find ANY mention of this area on the board, & the Pontos set has a cut-out where the cat`s are......
Any help gratefully appreciated!

It's difficult to make out, but it appears to be the one-but-darkest colour as applied to the hull. Certainly not the light colour of the superstructure.

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
Thanks EJ, quick reply!
3 further questions, if i may?
First, the kit part is moulded with raised planking. Is this correct or do i need to sand it smooth? (Obviously I`ve already attached it to the main deck, so guess what option ii`m hoping for...)
Second, I`m currently "Austerity Modelling" & only have a few colours to choose from. Which of these is the closest match: XF-53 Neutral Grey, XF-69 NATO Black, XF-80 Royal Light Grey, XF-54 Dark Sea Grey or XF-24 Dark grey?
Finally, what colour for the catapult runs themselves? a dark metallic or something else?
Thanks for ALL the help you guys have provided on this forum so far, & i hope this info helps out others too!!!

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
I am building the Tamiya 1/350 KGV painted the camo scheme as shown on the box art (Pacific fleet).
My question is this:I have seen many builds with that scheme some have the decks painted dark blue some not.Is there a definitive answer as to how to paint or not the decks if at all for that period?
