1/350 Enterprise CV-6

After getting to this stage, I am calling it quits on trying to "fix" the Trumpeter hull.



I am currently drawing up some lines so that I can scratchbuild the hull. IMHO the Trumpeter hull is very bad and much too important to ignore. To my eyes, more important the "small" details.

Hey Paul,

I wanted to correct the issues on my Hornet build I am about to start. I realized the amount of changes that would need to occur to get the kit to be correct to the actual ship that 80% of the kit would ultimately be discarded. This is too much work to modify a plastic kit in my opinion. So I am going to build her out of the box with some additions of photo etch and call it a day. My hopes are that another company will one day revisit this gorgeous class in 1/350.

There has been a lot of research by the guys in this thread:

They go through the majority of the corrections. Hopefully some of this is useful to you.

The hull is only the start. At this point, I may just scratch the whole thing with the exception of the 5" guns (Veterans), the 1.1 (Paper Labs), the 20 mm (Master Model) ,not sure for the 40 mm's, the air group, and some photo etch.

I've seen built up versions of the Trumpeter kit and the model has all the grace of a tramp steamer. Like any model, IMHO, you have to get the basic shape right first. I have three of the kits, I bought one and the other two were given to me. One of them by a former Enterprise crew member that I had known almost my entire life. He gave me the kit not too long before he passed away. He said he wouldn't have time to build it. I reckon I owe him a proper model.

Truth be told, I usually get more enjoyment out of scratch building and most of the time faster than correcting some errant kit. I have the Floating Drydock plan set that should give me the basics even though I'm not doing 1944.

I'll spend some time combing through the Hornet thread. Thanks for the tip.

Dave, thanks, I appreciate it. I kind of like those old Revell kits anyway. I built a lot of them as a kid and it is fun to go back now with the skills I've acquired over the time I've been back modeling, and all of the after market available, and do them up "right". For example, I recently build Revell's old P.T. 109, which I must have build a half dozen times as a kid, but this time with WEM PE, the 37mm cannon, and good bit of scratch building to correct the cockpit, torpedo tubes, depth charges, etc.. I think I'll have to add the old Revell Enterprise and and GMM PE to the stash. Looks like it could be a fun build and who doesn't want a reasonably accurate CV-6 on the shelf. I have the Trumpy Hornet I thought about trying to convert, but that hull is so bad my scratch building skills are nowhere near up to that task.

I've been logging more computer/drawing time than modeling lately. Finally have the waterlines done for the thickness of material that I am using.



After spending time with these lines, you can understand why the Enterprise could maneuver so well.

The lifts are cut. The differences in contour from the Trumpeter hull are readily apparent.

Agree. Maybe you should save the Trumpeter lower hull for an accompanying tanker scratchbuild?
