WIP: 1/350 HMS Dreadnought

Have started me HMS Dreadnought and waterline is what I have in mind.

Used black plastic for the base and with the pontos kit comes the port hole covers and surrounds.

Started on the 3in armament which needs 26 guns, only trouble is that there are only 25 brass barrels in this kit.

Can I do away with the forward 4 in the bow section so as not to request one more from Pontos.
Is this viable please.

There should be 26 barrels - maybe Pontos just missed the 26th one. They're probably happy to offer you a replacement if you let them know.

Thanks for that Timmy.

Will try emailing and see how it goes, trouble is its a very small item, but for me its a must to look and complete right.

Also note there are not enuff porthole covers on the silver fret the one with the torpedo nets.

Thats why its good to see other models being built here

Will be trying the wire for the portholes on lower hull and use the fret one's for the top hull portholes.
This may not look out of place me-thinks.

Have started this ship and am useing parts of the Pontos add on which is quite extensive but will be useing some Plastic parts instead of the Brass supplied.

Here's how far I have got.




Have removed lower hull and used Black plastic for the bottom.




Have made up the turrets and ready for painting.

Here I have placed the wood deck on and it went on very well, Having painted the plastic bits before hand.

I must add that the wood decks are fantastic and glad I have more for four other ships to place on.

Well seems me missing 3in brass gun is on its way

I was impressed with the Pontos website photos - all that brass.
I'm thinking of building mine unpainted and with both torpedo nets deployed.
Amazing amount of rigging involved, according to all the books I have.

Have now started on all the smaller parts.ie 3 in guns and searchlights.


Will have enuff 3 in guns to place in centre section.

Moved on a tad with HMS Dreadnaught.

Started on superstructure with lower body fitted and 3 in guns and searchlights fitted .







Bridge comeing along nicely but not yet fitted to ship.
The Admirals work platform has its railings and fixed down.
Lots of smaller parts worked on and ready for fitting.
You have to paint some items before hand and fit in sequence as its abit of a jungle around the main mast and bridge area.

Very nice work - I like it. She looks great waterline - think I may do the same.

great to see another Dreadnought on the go CP
Must admit that the Pontos mast set looks a lot easier than making your own.
Managed to damage right lower arm which has made it difficult to model recently but getting better slowly so will hopefully get back to mine sooner rather than later. Keep up the good work

Hi Martin.
Sorry, thought I was in the correct thread,oop's .

Hi Roy. Yes your right the brass mast is a bit fiddly but with care goes together well.
I used the plastic base mast which is just as good and supports the Brass mast very well, the rear mast again I used the plastic lookout but with brass top mast.
I am now sealing and painting the frets for/water tight doors boom net holders hatches extra.
Ladders to will be done this way before fitting.

Made both the brass bridge building up as well as the plastic one that comes with HMS DN kit.
I like the plastic one best so used that one here.

The ship will be on the move so Torpedo nets will be stowed for this build.
This is areal learning curve for me

Must agree, the larger sections of the masts are very good and do not need replacing.
Any chance of taking a pic of the net booms from the Pontos set, as i need to make my own for one side as i plan to show them deployed and rigged. The kit ones will not take rigging without bending

Hi Roy.
Is it the boom nets you need as I have decided to use the boom poles etc.
If its the nets can let you have them as I will not be useing, will show a picture if needed .
Here's my booms inplace if that helps, they make up from eight pieces each boom pole and attachments.


Have made up the boom net stowed and glued 0.25 plastic underneath to a-dear better and to bring up to the deck.


Plus boom supports on deck in closed position.

One side fitted after removeing plastic ones.




Still working on smaller items.

Thats a great help Chris on the rigging for the boom nets.

You asked Pontos on the numbers for the boom net supports, there all to do with the booms, there are 8 pieces for the boom fixing.

I also want to thank Kim of Pontos for the missing 3 in brass gun, not only did they replace the missing one but added 2 more in the package.

Have now done both sides with the boom supports and now are putting the very small fixing lugs to hold booms against hull.

No i just needed to have a look at the tips of the booms that Pontos have done, your pic shows the detail i was after nicely thanks.
Nice of you to offer the nets but i will be using the WEM ones, have already installed the port side nets in the stowed position and will get to the stb'd side which i intend to be out and fully rigged once i have mounted the hull onto it's base

Just one other thing on the boom end,as you can see there is an eye further down and there is also one on the end for the ropes etc, I have not placed on just yet.

In the stowed position did you use anything else to show the net stowed as I was thinking of putting some mesh on top of the pontos metal parts.
With the pontos kit you get some mesh(plastic I think) may bundle this as the stowed net.

As the WEM nets are waterlined i used a piece of nylon cord and wrapped the net around that

the cord was painted first then the p/etch was attached and painted
Make sure that the nets are NOT level, allow a small flow to give a more realistic and slightley uneven look

Thanks for that Roy.
Have been experimenting with copper wire and Mr surfacer, have let dry and then more Mr S and then imprint of mesh supplied from pontos, hope it shows mesh effect.

Here shows the netting on one side starting to come together( I hope).

Bridge come together now,just rear ladder to mount to bridge.

Overall work so far on main hull.

Moved on a little more with all railings on and think I have got the netting stowed looking something like it.

All Anchors and chains mounted plus flag staff on bow.


Stern flag post mounted and you can see better the sag of the boom netting.






Boats mounted but other detail yet to put on.
