Cable reels, how to.

Hi all, What do poeople us for the hose on hose reels and how do you attach it to the reel? I model in 1/350

I wrap some thin electrical wire around a thicker strand of metal - once wrapped, cut to length. Here's a pic of the attached, unpainted product: http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery ... 635-13.jpg

The image - doesn't that look great I only wish I could build something like that. What I do is, find a very small round syrene rod, cut with a razor and directly apply with PVA glue, then if I want, a tiny piece of fly fishing line that's suppose to be the cable, this can, but not always give a fuller look to the reel. Paint copper, white, anything that grabs the imagination.
At the moment there are a couple of reels on the market, my favorite where you simply turn up two ends then glue, and still wondering about this one, you actually cut out what will be 4 pieces to form a complete reel, not my cup of tea.
I seriously think I've got what my mum's got as my memory keeps going, anyway Bob almost forgot. When you select your styrene rod, take a small sheet of rough sand paper (looks like a map of the derert) and carefully wrap the rod giving it a twist, it won't look much until it has a coat of paint. And in 1-350 scale you'll have a much better result then if you repeat this in 1-700.

I use winding wire from electric shops



I drill in some plastic rod, wind the wire around the rod (while adding glue) and cut to size later.

Amazing cable reels.

I am having great difficulty in making PE cable reels, can you help

at the moment I am using Eduard PE for the 1/350 Academy Graf Spee, They look terrible, that is if the don't break first. There are three parts to a reel plus the plastic rod. Is there any PE reels in just 1 part + the plastic rod.

I can cut the rod the correct length using a Jig I have made I can fix this to the drum sides, but my problem arises when I try to bend the drum stand and fix the drum to it. The drum stand is do fragile that it either breaks or when I manage to get it assembled it is all out of shape.

Can you please help me, and give me some advice

I've had no problems bending the cable reels in GMM's England set - I imagine their reels for other ships are just as resilient.

Bill, if your kit still has it's original cable reels you can simply cut off the overscale reel ends and replace them directly with the end parts from the Eduard set. Use a slow setting glue such as PVA (white glue) and take your time in positioning them so they will be straight. I haven't seen the Eduard set but some PE manufacturers include a bottom 'spacer' from which the reel assembly folds up. They do not exist on the real ship and they tend to make the assembly difficult unless you manage to fold everything exactly at a 90 degree angle. They should be discarded.
