White topped rangefinder for friend vs. foe ID

Mucho-san's model (Mutsuo Uchiyama). IIRC, it took several years to build.

I guess the timeframe of that Mucho-san's model is before WWII according to the white bands on the funnel. As it shows Furutaka after 1939 reconstruction, the timing would be 1939-41, right?
The white rangefinder on the Gakken cover, on the other hand, corresponds to the first half of WWII. Is there any other evidence Furutaka had her rangefinder painted white until she was lost at Cape Esperance?

Yes, records from various yards she visited for drydocking.

Agree with Atma that the model is pre war but no degaussing cable means only before, say, up until mid 1941

Regarding the white topped director; there is no known photo of Furutaka in this time frame. However, there is a photo of division mate Aoba a few days after Cape Esperance and it does look like she has a white topped director.

Side stepping to the Aoba for a moment...has anyone yet tackled the Rainbow Models dedicated PE deck / SUPER set for the Hasegawa Aoba, 43347 kit ?

I don't believe I have ever seen this much brass dedicated to an IJN cruiser, in a PE set. With this much coverage however, I suspect the potential for error will increase as well.

Any thoughts ?

In my opinion this set is really good. There are some small errors but overall it is top.

Thx for posting that Aoba pic, Jose. According to L&W, most of he damage is on the port side, though the mainmast crashed to starboard, on the #1 12cm mount. Ouch.

Must've been a hell of a shot to bring down the whole mainmast Dan, those night battles around the Solomon must've been most intensive, scary and yet spectacular with all those fireworks!

The old kit of IJN Kako had the best artwork I ever see for a Japanese warship in 1/700, together with the new IJN Ise by Fujimi and the old IJN Hiryu from Aoshima.
