Hi all,

Can someone please tell me if ALL of the 6 secondary turrets (15cm) had ladders on them? I know the 2 centre ones with rangefinders each had a ladder on the rear on the right but what of the other 4? In the photos I've looked at I can't see any on the back but some people have installed ladders on the sides of these turrets on their models.

Now that I have a bit more time, I saw this question a bit too late, here's the configuration:

The two forward and the two middle turrets had their ladder rungs on the rear side, on each turret a bit off-centre to the outboard side.

The two aft turrets had the rungs not on the rear but on their inboard turret side, quite close to the aft corner.

Note these were noit ladders, just rungs. In order to reach them from deck level, they mounted very short ladders (just two rungs) to the lower turret edge. On the turret tops they had one/two (?) handles which made it easier to climb up.

on the tirpitz plan g paint scheme g,was the deck painted,i copied the pictures in the ship craft book(bismark & tirpitz),but because it didn't say anthing about the camo only being on one side,went and painted both side so before painting decks is the book correct.thanks for any info.

I don't think the decks were painted. Yes, the camouflage on the hull was just on one side, and no, the colours used for this illustration are not correct.

thanks Olaf,goofed again did it very dark green your colours are grey looks like the strip a kit paste coming out again,and i thought painting her was the easy bit after puting radio control in her and changing the kit from the bismark into the tirpitz.

Your green - and I hope beige and brown - is correct. It wasn't me with the grey. Spare your strip a kit paste for a real goof.

You converted a Bismarck into Tirpitz? May I ask for images and a list of the changes necessary?

Hello all.

Apologies if this question has been answered elsewhere, but what I'd like to understand is how different Tirpitz would have been when she was sunk as compared to the Bismarck when she was sunk (apart from their paint schemes)?

I ask because, as I understand it, there will be a 1/200 Bismarck available before too long, but I haven't heard any whispers about a 1/200 Tirpitz, so I'm wondering whether the two ships were sufficiently similar that a pretty poor modeller like me could bridge the gap.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can tell me the answer or point me to where I can find it.

Hello Nigel,

lots of differences, just to list the main ones that Tirpitz had more than Bismarck :

1) Bruno turret with flakvierling on top of it.

2) Flak vierling 20 mm on the upperworks behind Bruno turret.

3) main tower close on teh back and potato store between main tower and funnel.

4) Top main tower double radar on the top rangefinder

5) 20 mm vierlings on the funnel platform

6 ) Different crane and 105 mm positioning midship and different deck level at the level of catapult end extension at midship

7 ) two quadruple torpedo tubes midship

8 ) 8 by 105 mm C 33 on Tirpitz while Bismarck had 4 by C31 and 4 by C33 model

9 ) Wurzburg A/A radar on Tirpitz

10 ) 2 spherical A/A domes on top A/A rangefinders

11 ) 2 flak vierlings on aft platforms just back to Caesar turret

than different layout of A/A guns, stairs, platforms, dummy guns, barbettes, air ventilation systems, etc etc

As you can see Tirpitz and Bismarck were a lot different,... so it will be a huge work,....

hi mate there was a 67percent difference between the 2 ships thats a huge amount we can only pray for a large accurate Tirpitz,
just to add to the list ..
the hawser train for the anchors was different
the wave breaker equipment to the decks
Tirpitz had 2 bulkheads each side of the main tower to help support the 2 large range finders that Antonio mentioned
the funnel was a different shape
Bismarck had a covered stairwell on the side of the main tower bridge, TP didnt
the Battery deck on TP was different
the 2 large cranes were a deck higher on tp
The funnel cranes were different
the double aircraft main hangar Different
Later Tp had the crows nest removed
the bow was a different shape
more AA
torpedo tubes
thats enough off the top of my head
however
good luck with the model

Antonio, Jim - thanks very much for taking the time to reply - I feel a bit of a chump for even asking - I thought that they were almost identical, but no doubt a quick surf would have disabused me of that belief!!

Anyway, there's no way on earth I'm capable of making the necessary changes so, as you say, I will have to say a little prayer and hope that a 1/200 Tirpitz comes along....

go to the Bismarck Tirpitz site lots of goodies on there
the most accurate kit to date is the 1/350 revell
but it needs altering depending on the timeline you wish to do.

I'm intending to do the Tirpitz as she was when she was sunk - I've had the privilege of visiting Tromso and the island where she went down/over, and I even have a couple of tiny bits of her that had been left on the beach, near the tallboy crater, by divers.

So that's the background to my interest in the Tirpitz rather than the Bismarck, and also my interest in her final colour scheme.

youve been to Tromso..wow
ive been to Wilhelmshaven slipway 2 or whats left of it where she was built.
with Antonio, and hes been to both sites so no doubt he will contribute,
If you wish to build her in this period, you must remember she was heavily damaged when she arrived.
I would urge you to visit John Asmussens site ,Bismarck Tirpitz google it. his book also has photos of her in Tromso that have not been published before..before she was sunk, she was only in Tromso over 3 week .
there were some items missing off her e.g. starboard crane. port funnel searchlight cover. she also had a list to port
i have done the revell kit of her just before the Xcraft attack in Kaa fiord, after a few alterations to the kit. hopefully when ive learned to post pics on here i will do it.
if you get to the stage of building her we can help when you need it..

Hi Jim - thanks for the reply and the info.

I've been to Tromso 10 times, but sadly only to "Tirpitz beach" once.

That said, every time I land or take off there I try to make sure that I'm on the side of the plane that looks out over the Tirpitz wreck site - if the tide's low you can still see some of the Tallboy craters, but no doubt you've already seen the photos on the various websites out there. It always makes my day!

having a near total obsession with Tirpitz most of my adult life, yes ive seen all the Tromso stuff on film, taken by my dear friend John Asmussen.
please let us know if your going to build her
i have only been to Wilhelmshaven once,the Marineweft yard looks nothing like it did when they built Tirpitz.The slipway has been half filled in and there are trees planted across it.
the bottom half is water then it runs into the square.
however there is a 15cm single gun from the wreck nearby.

Hello everyone! First of all i want to thank you all for a very interesting thread! I recently bought Tamiyas 1/350 Tirpitz and since this i my first ship model this thread have been very helpful.

I do however have a very basic question still. I'm not sure which colors i should use! Im looking to do Paint Scheme I (September 1942 - July 1943) ( http://www.bismarck-class.dk/tirpitz/pa ... _1942.html ). Those red turrets really caught my eyes! I'm going to use Tamiya paints and if anyone happen to know (guesses are fine and appreciated to ;) ) which XF-numbers those are i would really appreciate if you could help me out!

im sorry but i would not have bought that one as the revell is much better.
also ive never done her in that scheme
my advice would be to google revell 1/700 tirpitz instruction sheet and see how you get on from there
i believe they do her in this scheme
