Well its now comeing to the finish line with motor boats now finished and all except rigging done .
From the stern.

Boats now ready to mount.



With all boats on and photo etch crane rigging mounted.

Hehe, Well do not know about the younger Roy, but at 68 you have to move faster .
Have seven other ships to make and not rigged the Mikasa yet

Just really enjoying this build, only some small details on deck and rigging to do, then its the base and water to finish.

Retired, well that explains it.
Not much on mine due to work and home improvement projects. Just come in to get warm and have a brew then it's back outside for more toil.
But i did get chance last night to go over the rigging plan for the deployed net booms, must admit it left me a bit but i'll get there in the end.

I am a little stuck on the rigging, I wonder Roy if you could help.
Are there any drawings that I can use that are not copy right or that I may procure in some way..

This mainly for the upper superstructure.

Have either of you got the Anatomy of the Ship book on Dreadnought? I have a copy and there are full rigging drawings in there... section by section.

If you don't have a copy and can't get one, PM me, I may be able to help

I have a copy of AOTS that was kindly lent to me by Mike Mcabe, unsure if it breaks copyright if i scan a page though.
Would rather make sure first, before i do.

My understanding is that you are entitled to copy or scan something for personal use... but selling or making something commercially available would be a breach of copyright.

Well before the rigging,(have started) I am working on the base.
makeing water for ships is my first time, have used water for other diorama's before though.

For the base I have started with some Green grass I have plenty of, this I used for the base with ship cut out.




I then have placed tissue paper and glued with PVA.



Once dry will paint with black enamel paint and seal.
Then its on with the sea proper.
Thats it so far.

Moved on a tad with the water effect.
HMS Dreadnaught plowing through the water.


As you can see I have not started the painting yet.('well tell a lie') I did paint it but it was not good enuff so went over it again with filler.



Stern to have frothy water when painted.


Then its on with some of the small bits that came loose and then the dreaded Rigging .

(Martin... when we met up in New York a few weeks ago we talked about dong a parallel build on Dreadnough just as we did with Tiger a year or two ago. I am still working on Mikasa and am a couple of months away from finishing... how are you doing.. possibility of starting yours around then?)

Have now finished the sea effect and added two coats of Klear to the finished painting.

That looks excellent!!! A really good colour... what paints did you use?

I can almost feel the cold sea water around her as she slowly cruises past... brrr....!

After makeing a hash of the first paint I used Mr Surfacer 500 all over to cover the embost paper I used.

Then it was a mix of Model color Vallego Light Sea grey and Grey blue plus some white.
I then used a common filler around the ship and some on the waves, all let dry for 24 hrs then two coats of Klear.
I expect most know what I mean by Klear, but for those that do not its a floor sealing product that dries hard and the more you put on(dif coats drying) the more it shines.
A lot of modelers use this for decal setting and cockpit canopies etc.

Not to hijack this fine thread with it's amazing work, but....maybe in the fall. Have to finish Iwo Jima, then a commission build of the 1/350 Trumpeter North Carolina, which is already in progress.

Cap't - looks even better with the seascape painted. I'm lovin' this build.

Well the rigging has started and it is turning out not bad for a first time, 'but slow'.

Useing the WEM product and its a fine one to use and in scale.
Have some stretched plastic done but will use for the horizontal phase later.

Found that the Pontos plastic netting supplied with the add on makes good rigging thread when separated and sticks well with pva.
