Hello

I was embarked and served aboard the USS John F Kennedy, CV-67 from 1971-1972 as Flag Staff personnel COMCRUDESFLOT8 under Admiral Harry D. Train. I am interested in building a 1/350 scale of the ship. I understand it is hard to find but given it is a Kitty Hawk class and seems that USS America CV-66 can be modified to make the JFK. How or where can I get the America kit?

Welcome!

Unfortunately, you must've misread somewhere - there is no USS America kit in 1/350. The only supercarriers available in 1/350 scale are the Tamiya Enterprise (-65) and Trumpeter Nimitz (-68).

Might you have been reading about the 1/720 scale Italeri or 1/700 Fujimi Kittyhawk kits instead?

Thats about right. The America was the right choice for this build. I have pictures of the JFK from 2007 in Boston. The Nimitiz class was longer and has a different rear deck layout. I plan on doing the same build but i will use the Kitty Hawk kit from Fujimi.

I built next year (start) the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy Cv 67 in scale 1:144 radiocontrolled. I think ca. 3 years is enough to try all on the water/lake near by me.

Now I want have all Info to made the aircraft carrier in 1:144 (plans, measuring plans, data sheets and all, what I find. I will find the Terzibaschitsch's book in germany or im Internet. I have stored all Pictures and photos what I find in the Internet (special site of Navy) but I find no detailed sites of measurements.

I've been toying with the idea of converting a Trumpeter 1/350 Nimitz into a JFK. The dimensions are similar, flight deck nearly the same. I would need to practically start from scratch on the island, but, this is a doable project. At least get it close enough in accuracy to distinguish it as CVA-67. It is still just a thought, I've been researching the available images and it really seems doable. BTW, where is she docked these days?

JFK is mothballed in Philadelphia. There was a plan to make her a museum ship in Rhode Island but I do no know if that plan is still viable.

I do not have any info on the entry procedures into the former Philadelphia Naval shipyard. My guess is probably not. However, youtube video below shows you may be able to get a good view.

Hey everyone.
I've got a really old Academy JFK model. It came with F-4s, A-4s, and A-3s. I served aboard her in the 1990s, and did a Med cruise in 1997, with Carrier Air Wing 8. The problem with it is, is that it is a weird 1/785 scale. Does anyone have a recommendation for upgrading the air wing with the 1997 fit for it? Seems 1/700 is fairly common, but they would be a bit big. Also, the radars, masts, etc. are pretty bad. Any recommendations? Thanks.

The scale problem:
A quick comparison of your kits scale against common scales.

1/800 scale, 1" = 800" or 1" = 66' 8"
1/785 scale, 1" = 785" or 1" = 65' 5"
1/720 scale, 1" = 720" or 1" = 60'
1/700 scale, 1" = 700" or 1" = 58' 4"

Metric
1/800 scale, 1cm = 800cm or 1cm = 8.00 meters
1/785 scale, 1cm = 785cm or 1cm = 7.85 meters
1/720 scale, 1cm = 720cm or 1cm = 7.20 meters
1/700 scale, 1cm = 700cm or 1cm = 7.00 meters

Linear difference between 1/720 and 1/700 is small with 1/720 being 97.2% the length of 1/700
Linear difference between 1/785 and 1/700 is bigger with 1/785 being 89.1% the length of 1/700
Linear difference between 1/785 is 1.875% longer than 1/800.

There are 1/800 CVN and CV models. ARII is one manufacturer in that scale. You might be able to chase down some planes in that scale, but the 1/700 might be too big.

you have correctly id all the squd's for that cruise, but did you know one thing that happened on that cruise?
There was a wing spread done on the hangar bay of a E-2C hawkeye in hangar bay one done fore and aft in bay 1, something they said could not be done on the KENNEDY as the width of the bay was to narrow, but I was the yellow shirt that did it, it was posted in NAVY TIMES, and Ive got a pic of it I'll find and post it.[color=#4040BF[/color]

I'm pretty sure the kit you have is an old Monogram mold. That kit came with the A-3's, A-4's and F-4's as well. They did what I believe is the only injection molded JFK pretty much ever. They re-issued it as the Kitty Hawk in the late 70's (which it clearly is not). It is not a great kit, but the island seems to be pretty close to scale for 1/700-1/720 and a reasonable starting point for a Nimitz kit conversion to a JFK. If you look back over the previous page plus of this topic you can see a couple of different approaches to building a reasonable JFK.

I've never heard of or seen an Academy JFK kit but would be very interested in seeing pictures of it if you could post some.

I have the Monogram kit. It is boxed as the Kitty Hawk but is definitely the JFK. The only thing that could pass for Kitty Hawk is the hull number. Flight deck and island are definitely intended to be JFK, even if there are some errors.

My plan was to use the island as a basis for a conversion of an Italeri America/Nimitz hybrid to produce a JFK in 1/720.

Do you know of where I might see pictures online of the Academy kit?
