Thanks, I may need some magnifying device for the smaller parts, but anyway I have ordered the Warspite kit. Long term project I think.

Optivisor's may not be the cheapest magnifier, but since I bit the bullet and spent some beer tokens on one it has more than proved well worth the money.

Thanks Richard, do they work ok with spectacles though? I have read another thread here that seems to suggest you have to remove any spectacles to use them. Magnifying anglepoise lamps don't seem popular with ship builders here either. I think I have quite a bit of kit to aquire, I have an airbrush in the loft somewhere but my modelling tool box is quite depleted, that is if I can still find it. Tweazers would seem to be a must, lots of them in all kinds of shapes.

I have just revisited a Website related to the Queen Elizabeth class and Warspite in particular, it's by Troels Hanson, there is some new artwork since I last visited. Is it well known amongst people here?

Good decision briyeo, I'm sure you will enjoy building her. I'm partly inspired with HMS Warspite as I had the old Airfix 1:600 model in my younger days, and she was a firm favourate amongst my collection then, so building this new Academy one will be my replacement HMS Warspite model.

Reading about your father was fascinating; I love hearing these kinds of first hand accounts that really connects the history that we love so much closer to real life. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Rob, you should have heard him tell how he captured the Italian fleet, after a few pints of beer To be honest he didnt talk a great deal about those days, an old war film on TV would get him telling a few stories, and if my air rifle was hanging around the house, we would sometimes get the full rifle drill. you never forget it apparently

How does the Trumpeter 1/350 kit stack up accuracy wise?

Hey Guys!

Its my first post here.. I am normally a Aircraft guy but have been getting the itch to build a couple of ships! So I have picked up 1/350 Hasegawa Nagato, Hobby Boss Arizona and the Academy Warspite!

Having no info at all on anything that floats without wings... Hopefully you guys can help or point me in the right direction...

I would like to model my Warspite off this photo of her off the coast of Normandy during the invasion...



Are there any major exterior changes/mods that I need to take into mind, by using the 1942 boxing from Academy and building her to a June 1944 spec?

Is the simplified HMS Warspite catapult system as per Academy and Pontos model correct? I notice that the Queen Lizzie has a turntable and a track to shift the aircraft in to the hangar, which seems a more logical design to me.

How would the aircraft be manoeuvred in to the hangar using the Warspite catapult system? Just lowered by crane on to to the deck and pushed in using the tail wheel for steering?

Secondly, where would the cradle be stored during aircraft hangar time? I ask because I want to build my Academy HMS Warspite with the hangar door opened, and the Walrus inside with its wings folded back.

So I guess the cradle is stored below the aircraft in the hangar? I'm on the lookout for pics Walrusses stored in Hangars as well but haven't found many.

Wow! Those KGV/PoW pics are awesome. I`ll use them for a little artistic licence on my Warspite. They will definitely help me with my KGV, which may be my next build. Thanks EJ.

EDIT: It looks like the aircraft remains on the cradle whilst in the hangar, which would make sense if the aircraft runs along rails in to enter the hangar.

I wonder why the Walrus would need the main undercarriage wheels attached/down - if it is never off the cradle presumably the wheels would never touch the deck?

p.s. - love the photos above of the KGV and/or PoW cataput rail arrangement - particularly the first one with the ratings (are some Marines) doing some sort of rifle training (presumably not live firing though), and the second one it looks like those two guys behind are quickly getting out of the way up onto the 5.25" mount.

I've been looking at the info I have, my Anatomy of Warspite book has a large print of that photo of Warspite refuelling in '42, and it appears to me that there are no rails running perpendicular to the catapult into the hangars. There is something on the deck in front of the hangar, but it doesn't appear to be rails, it could be some sort of frame or even a ramp.

Incidentally my Ensign book of the Queen Elizabeth class has an aerial view of HMS Queen Elizabeth and plans, and she does have the rails and turntables into the hangars. This may be due to her being refitted a few years later than Warspite - a similar time to the construction of the early KGV class, perhaps this was a new development then.

I can scan and post excerpts on here (if the moderators will allow it) if anyone wants to see to decide for themselves.

There's a plethora of whole navies waiting to be built, how could there not be enough ... but even one scratch-built model takes a lot of time; I now understand 'fleet in being' a lot better

I will have to find the larger size photo that Roger Torgeson sent me that I posted here. Perhaps it will give more of a clue.

Does anyone have pictures pictures showing her DG cable?

And I know they were moved inside during her USA repair/refit.
