1/350 CVN-65 Enterprise WIP

Thanks Charles, I believe I had read somewhere they were called bollards. So many nautical terms I have forgotten over the years. I hope to get some work done in the next couple of days. My weekends are Tuesday and Wednesday unlike most people. Although it turns out most of the good holidays are on Tuesday and Wednesday this year. Good news for me.

Well, have not gotten much done over the last couple days. I decided the shop needed to be cleaned up and organized. I did receive a big present from the mail man today.

Ok, got the shop/office cleaned up and organized. It only took three days I guess that could explain the state of things over the last few months or years! I figure with such a large build ahead of me I need organization. I hate not being able to find things. I hope within the next year or two to have a complete rebuild of the shop. I plan on getting custom build furniture made to my exact specifications. I want everything to be very functional and match. As of now everything I have is just second hand furniture that does the job, just not very appealing to the eye. I also want a dedicated paint booth. After the Enterprise build I want to do the Nimitz, but I want to do either a 144 or 72 scale. If I do go 72 I will need to move to the garage and that will require a major remodel. I will need to insulate heat/cool, and all new work stations. I like that idea, but I kind of like having one of my cars in the garage. I guess if I go with the 72 I will have to make the sacrifice. At 40 years old I have to get started soon or she may never get finished. Anyways here are some pics of the office/shop cleaned up today. Now time to sniff some glue.

Nice where'd you get the case from?

I ordered the case from my local glass shop. I think they contract out for acrylic work like this.

Finally got some work done today. I mainly worked on cleaning up the hull and undoing some of the work I did twenty years ago.

First off I removed the drain pipes from the starboard side of the hull under the hangar doors and to the rear of sponson 1. From what I can tell they where no longer there in 2001. In the process of removing them I also realized I would have to remove some of the bollards. I will have to remake one and resin cast them to replace in the future. I also removed all the molded doors so they can be correctly located and replaced with PE.

I removed the elevator guides that I installed years ago to they can be cleaned up and correctly shaped.

I also have noticed in my research that the E has what appears to be hull stiffeners all the way around the boat. They are very subtle and only noticeable in the highest resolution photos. I am going to make these out of very thin styrene sheets. Because of these needing to be added I went ahead and removed all the bollards.

I also spent some time with a random orbital sander leveling out the water line. Although still not perfect it is much better than it was and after attaching the ship to the base everything should be nice and level.

I cleaned up some of the Bondo work I did to cover up the vents all around the hull. I plan to redo all the vents in the correct locations. Not looking forward to that job, but another symptom of AMS.

And the last thing for the day was the removal of the two guides for the old Boston whaler located in the port UR opening. I have two rigid hull boats ordered to replace the whaler.

The plan for tomorrow if I get time to work in the ship is to finish cleaning up the hull, i.e. putting up the small nicks and dents made today by removing all the pipes/doors and such.

Hello all. Once again, I had to take another break to work on a couple of commission builds for one of my local Rhino drivers and one not so local. I completed one tonight, and have one more to finish up. I have decided I will not take any more orders until my ship is completed. I feel like if I keep getting side tracked I will never get the ship done. Here is the Rhino I completed tonight from VFA-102, headed off to Japan.

Nice hangar bay shot.

I was just on Enterprise a few weeks ago for the inactivation and grabed over 1,000 shots of the ship.

I'm maping out that front end of the hangar right now. Amazingly complex part of the ship.

I was suprised by those stiffeners as well. Really makes for a different looking ship in person.

"Dutchman Bollards" (or at least that is what we called them) used for mooring lighterage alongside.

Really great to hear from you! Always welcome your input! When did you first see these bollards?

BTW, Pontos is going do a 1/350 modernization set for CVN-65. They could really use your help.

Scott, very nice work. I didn't know about bronco or veteran model detail sets/parts. May I ask what they cost? I really like the resin Helos you showed. From looking at your PE stash and me having the same two kits...I know my wallet is going to say ouch

Hey all. I have been working on the build, but I ran into a big problem. I was working on the hanger bay and realized the hull was now warped. I believe this was due to my cutting the hull for waterline and not reinforcing it before or after the cut. The hull had twisted length wise and separated crosswise because of the hanger deck supports being to long. So, after a few days of trying different things to fix it, I gave up. I gave up on fixing it, not the build. I have a second kit now. This has given me the opportunity to correct some things I did not like about what I have already done. I have been working on and off for may years and my skills have progressed to a point where I am not satisfied with some of what I have already done. I will post photos when I have more done.

Sorry to hear about your build, but it's good to see that you are back at it and will be continuing. I look forward to your posts and progress. One good thing though, at least Veteran models is making the sea sparrow launchers now! You have a pretty sweet setup in office/hobby room too. I will be following along sir.......
