Calling all Bismarck and Tirpitz fans

Hello everyone! First of all i want to thank you all for a very interesting thread! I recently bought Tamiyas 1/350 Tirpitz and since this i my first ship model this thread have been very helpful.

I do however have a very basic question still. I'm not sure which colors i should use! Im looking to do Paint Scheme I (September 1942 - July 1943) ( http://www.bismarck-class.dk/tirpitz/pa ... _1942.html ). Those red turrets really caught my eyes! I'm going to use Tamiya paints and if anyone happen to know (guesses are fine and appreciated to ) which XF-numbers those are i would really appreciate if you could help me out!

You could eyeball the colours from the Tamiya paint range: (off) white, light grey, medium grey, dark grey, even darker grey for boot-topping and steel decks.

im sorry but i would not have bought that one as the revell is much better.
also ive never done her in that scheme
my advice would be to google revell 1/700 tirpitz instruction sheet and see how you get on from there
i believe they do her in this scheme

I realised that after I bought the kit but I did get it at a low price so I'm not that upset about it. I have also bought Eduards photo etch for it and in combination with some scratch building attempts I think I should be able to make it alright. :)

I did find the Revell-instructions but unfortunally they arent that much help since they call for alot of mixing of Revells colors to get the right shade.

The tamiya-instructions have one paint option which is very similar to this one but the colors feel a little off when compared to the drawing. The tamiya-instructions says that the darkest grey is Dark Grey XF-24, the medium grey is Light grey XF-66, the lightest grey is Dark sea grey XF-54 and the bow and stern is matt white + dark sea grey.

Looking at the drawing it feels like Dark Grey is to light while Dark sea grey is to dark. What do you guys think about those colors? Are they maybe correct or should i change them?

For his ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE my German modelbuilding chum Jan used XF19 for the light grey (RAL 7001, superstructure), XF66 for the medium grey (RAL 7000, hull) and XF63 for the dark grey. We came to the conclusion that they maybe used the dark grey intended for the decks (and boot-topping), because we aren't sure if they had the 1941 camouflage paints in the paint locker in the South Atlantic in 1939. Please note that the XF63 should be close to the boot-topping (RAL 7016) in John's illustration. The dark grey pattern on the hull was noticable lighter than the boot-topping. I believe it was RAL 7024, the same or similar to the dark bow/stern/turret tops of Bismarck and others in Baltic camouflage. This is in the 1941 paint regulations, and you would need this for your dark grey on the hull (but again: lighter than the XF63).

The light grey in John's illustration is too light. I told him once, but... well...
In some photos this light grey can appear very light, but the majority of the photos shows it a bit darker.

John's medium grey could have been the regular hull grey (RAL 7000). This had (and has!) a subtle hint of blue in it, lacking in the illustration.

its an endless topic these bloody colours.
In John Asmussens new book about Camouflage 1939-1941
he mentions scale effect which is a huge difference in the colours Olaf mentions'
in effect what looks darker close up is a lot lighter far away, and we are dealing with big famous ships which everyone wants to get right.
im :censored_2: at painting and the first to admit it.
i find the Tamiya colours hard to deal with.
i used revell colours for my Tirpitz which have turned out very strong
you would have seen my Tirpitz from 15 miles away...not happy
anyway Olaf knows what hes talking about and great respect for that .
would love to see Trumpys new Bismarck, ill wait for Tirpitz

Jim, I haven't used these Tamiya colours on models, but I found the overall effect on that Graf Spee very good. I just pass on what Jan told me. I'm using Revell Aqua Colors as I find it easier mixing them. Furthermore, Revell has quite a few RAL shades in their range, and I simply lighten them up for scale effect. The latter is nothing new, some apply it to models, some not. I'm the last who would not recommend WEM colours for instance, but I always would suffix the recommendation with *lightem them up*.

greetings everyone. As Trumpeter has said they are coming out with a 1/200 scale Bismarck later this year. I have held off in buying a 1/350 scale one. I have read a few books on the Bismarck and was wondering if anyone here could recommend any books that might help model the Bismarck in 1/200 scale when it comes out. I haven't built any Trumpeter naval ships are they any better than others?

Depends. Sometimes they put in their best effort on a subject and it ends up great (e.g. the Arleigh Burke kits) and sometimes they don't give two rats' ass about it and it's terrible (e.g. Fletcher class The Sullivans kit). I imagine that the 1/200 kit should be "pretty good", though, since it'll be their crown jewel, so to speak. But wait until the reviews come out to be sure.

I need to know something very simple otherwise, but from the pictures i got so far i cant tell for sure.
My question is this:During Hitler's visit to Bismarck, was the Bismarck moored next to a dock or in the open sea, and hence how did Hitler got on board , via a ladder and a speed boat , or via a bridge from a dock?
I know its a weird question to ask, but i have to built a small dio with Hitler paying his visit , and i dont know if and what was next to her , or how did Hitler got on board her.
From the only picture i found that shows partly the side of the ship, it seems like another ship was used to carry Hitler and his party till the place were Bismarck was moored.Any ideas what type was it if that was the case?

Hitler and his staff went out to the ship, which was anchored in the roadstead, aboard Hitler's yacht Hela. They would have been "piped" aboard the battleship via one of its boarding ladderways.

Now Hela, the vessel visited by the most famous people of last century, including world leaders, cosmonauts, ministers, famous artists being stupidly sold by Ukraine authorities, is stripped off its interior and superstructure was cut off completely.
The 2 its submarine type MAN diesels which only was worked 18% of its resource were removed and utilized.

Apparently, they are going to make it a mini cruise ship. It will supposedly look like before, but completely new ship inside. With all the original being destroyed, what the heck is the point?

I don`t like trolls. There must be a printing mistake on that decal sheet.
