Go to http://hnsa.com/doc/plans/cv7.pdf, Pages 8,9,10,11. Its the Wasp, rather than an Essex, but you'll get an idea of what tracy is Talking about.

Thanks Tracy. I'm just making a wiring diagram and didn't know if these guys had names or not. I'm not up for detailing the inside at this point so I'm good.

Hi All,

I ordered, and received plans for USS Bennington from the Floating Drydock (USS Bennington CV20 1945 Bu Ships# 396553aA-Y1) and am thrilled by it. First, it's huge (over 10' long) so I had to spread it out on my floor to look at it. Second, the detail is awesome!

I do have a question about it though. The plans say that the stripes on the flight deck are "Blue". This seems odd since I thought the deck was supposed to be Deck Blue and it seems that blue on blue wouldn't be very visible. Is it possible that the deck wasn't stained? Or, is the blue they refer to a real dark blue?

Anyone know?

First off; the floating drydock plans aren't always accurate, so don't be afraid to questions and verify details.

Second, the colors used on carrier deck markings evolved over the course of the war. Originally they were a color to match Ocean Gray; that changed when the main deck stain was changed to match Ocean Gray. I haven't seen any official documentation yet, but yellow and white were the main colors, with white being the one I see predominantly.

Tracy,
So you're saying that something labeled "G/A OVERALL PLAN VIEW for CV20-31,BuShips#396553 aA-Y1" Might not actually be copied builder's plans, but as open to inaccuracy as one might expect with plans labeled Sumrall, Chesley or McCandliss, etal?

My main familiarity with inaccurate plans from FDD is their Arizona set. It shows radar and AA guns that weren't embarked before she was lost; when I asked Tom why he included it he said that he had re-drawn from the last Booklet of General Plans for Arizona, which showed mods she was slated to get. So, in that case he was using official drawings for the ship, but hadn't checked for their accuracy. His plans for Bennington may be bang-on; I'm just saying that if you see something that is at odds with what you see in a photograph, don't be afraid to question the plans.

Wow, Thanks.

I didn't realize that he drew them. They look like official Navy blue prints to me, complete with signatures.

You have to look at the plan designations in his listings.
The plans you have are marked Bu, meaning builders plans. The "Bu" Series of plans are copies of the Navy's builders plans. Besides BB, CV, CA, CL, DD, SS, Landing, Patrol.......it also covers ship's boats, deck equipment & catapult.

The "G" series plans are copies of US Navy "Booklet of General Plans". These plans show both interior and exterior views. A few of the original plans have been re-drawn by us due to poor reproduction quality of the original and some interiors are omitted. These plans can be used to build a model or use for research projects. The date listed is the last date the plans were corrected.

"GQ" Series:These are re-drawn "Booklet of General Plans". All exterior views and items have been added, however all INTERIORS are omitted. Each drawing is ideal for the model builder. Please the codes to see what views are with these drawings.

The Arizona plans Tracy refers to are marked TFW which are redrawn plans based on another source, in this case, the Arizona's last Booklet of General Plans. Apparently, the Booklet of General Plans reflected modifications that hadn't been completed yet, so they appeared of TFW's redraw

The blue print took 36 scans to capture, but the entire plan is now in AutoCad.
