Re: Calling all WWII Essex Class Carrier Fans!
No one does really accurate ones. I think I like WEM's the best, but even theirs are missing details and simplified. A blend of the WEM and Tom's sets might be your best option.

Hmmmm,
What about using L'Arsenal's perforated sheet ($8) and adding rails? Would that work?

Refueling station. If you have AOTS Intrepid look at page 80.

Thanks!
At least I know what it is, but sadly I don't have the reference you refer to. Only Arnold's and Raven's books and Bean's DVD (Essex 2). And the Internet of course.

They're really just two cylinder canisters mounted parallel... I haven't measured them but I'd think .020" plastic rod would work well.

Re: Calling all WWII Essex Class Carrier Fans!
I found a picture of them. Interestingly enough after poring over pic after pic on the net and on Bean's DVD, the picture I found that had a shot of the refueling station was of Bennington. The pic is a little blurry, but at least now I kind of know what they are supposed to look like.

Basically, airplane gas pumps. Left one is regular, right is the hard stuff! Clean the windshield and I'll take 800 rounds of fifty cal to go.

Re: Calling all WWII Essex Class Carrier Fans!
Question regarding running lights...
I'm perhaps showing my naval ignorance again here, but I thought that the green and red running lights on ships were mounted on the bough, with a white one on the stern. In the plans I have of Bennington (clip attached) the red and green lights appear to be mounted on the splinter shields adjacent to the bridge. The only lights on the bough are bow designation and anchor lights. Is this typical? Did they not have the running lights on the bow?

Re: Calling all WWII Essex Class Carrier Fans!
Well, for one, it's "bow."
The port & Starboard Navigation lights are required to be viewable to the front and to an angle of 22.5 degrees aft of the beam of the ship. Putting them on the bow on such a wide ship would hide a good portion of that aft arc, so they're generally mounted on the superstructure on all ships near the bridge.

Port navigation light on Bennington
Later in her career
and while we're at it, Port side flag bag, notice flight deck to right and below, with rolled up canvas flag bag cover, and showing how flags hang in bag and a signalman adding a flag to the signal hoist.

Interesting... notice that the flag level and pilot house level *splinter shields* appear to no longer be in dazzle, but that above that the pattern still exists? I wonder if that was shot when they were repainting her.Russ2146 wrote:Later in her career

Re: Calling all WWII Essex Class Carrier Fans!
There are some in the individual collections on the Bennington website, that are supposedly wartime 1945, where the difference is really 'in your face'.

Re: Calling all WWII Essex Class Carrier Fans!
Man,
I've looked at the first (and third) picture numerous times (along with the one below) when I was making the decals for the scoreboard, and never knew that that was the light. It just goes to show that sometimes you have to know what you are doing to find out more about what you are doing. As for the pic taken during painting, you may well be right. I have the picture you sent dated July, 1945, which is when she would have been in Leyte, and the pic I attached is sometime in 1946 and she has clearly been painted out of dazzle.
Another good feature of the flag bag shot to me is that it looks like the flag has a hoist of 6'. I've made mine 5', but I think I'm going to stick with it.
As always, thanks for the great info!

Re: Calling all WWII Essex Class Carrier Fans!
Hey All,
Does anyone know what these features are? I can find one on a photo, but not the other one. They dont look like the other lines on the plan and they have a little triangle associated with them, that I assumed is a bracket mount of some sort?
