Building the C A D -N-1 Kashtan air defence gun system

Until I make a full blown start on the Steregushchiy I'll commence with an interim build of the CAD-N-1 Kashtan air defence gun system .
OK a rhetorical question � what is a Kashtan�. The one that is to be modelled is a CIWS gun system as fitted to Steregushchiy. Subsequent ships in the class are not fitted with this system forward as this position is now occupied by the VLS. Basically the gun system is bolted on and unlike the AK630 CWS has its own tracking radar capable tracking multiple targets and prioritising each threat. The Kashtan is an automated system tracking in radar and TV optical. The two guns are liquid cooled; gas operated 30mm GSh-30K six barrel Gatling type having a link-less feeding system with a 1000 round capacity.


Modelling the Kashtan
I�ll do my best not just to show each of the parts as they are being made and assembled into place but try to explain the thought process and the reasoning in how I arrive at and use the methodology in the construction. To start with I spend some time going over each of the pictures and made the conscious decision to divide the assembly into 6 sub structures . By reducing what does seem a complex fitting into a minimum number of prime parts actually reduces the complex nature of the fitting . I have to be honest though the Kashtan is a challenging piece to build as there are quite a number of add on fittings .

I shall be watching this one really closely.

I always wished to build a Russian warship, but got stuck with the Scharnhorst, and a list of future builds.

Gday Dave I'm really looking forward to this one. More detail is always welcome. I have 8 on board the Admiral Kuznetsov and 1 on another Russian warship (Steregushchiy at 1/72, yes I will be building one also) I hope to pick up the hull this weekend. Thank god the Frunze (??????) I plan to build doesn't have any.

where's the "like-button" when you need it?

So if I see it correctly the Kashtan Stereguchiy never carried the missiles and doesn't have the reload hatches below the mount? I do see there is already a difference in the barrel support compared to the older versions. And that support is partly also the support for the missiles on top (on older versions). Always thought she had the missiles as well on Stereguchiy. It's rare to see them actually in place, so it didn't look suspicious to me that the missiles aren't visible on any pictures.

Hi Norberto thanks for looking in . The kashtan was only fitted to the Steregushchiy both the Soobraziltelnyy and Boikiy have missile launches in place of the Kashtan .

As mentioned I reduce the parts to manageable sections. Although there are many more "bits� to be grafted on once the basic Kashtan in constructed. First and foremost when building any part or fittings is to work in mental 3D. This is not a hard process but requires a little practice. When I view a fitting or an entire superstructure {ARH is gifted at this} I don't see it as one entity but as a series of interrelated manageable parts. The first picture showed the Kashtan highlighting the sections that I need to separate. This picture shows those sections in their detached form , not just modelling but in a coordinated sequence of assembly which we shall deal with next. Any questions or comments please fire away. Hi Roel You are quite right the Kashtan for Stereguchiy is "bolt on" .Even if they wanted to retro fit the missle pods there is no reload facility below deck hence gun only configuration.

The first task is to assemble section 2 the mounting .
The base of the mounting is circular and around the edge are 20 flange pieces cut to the hight of the inner disc .


At 4 points the flange pieces are spaced quite close together .


The rest of the flange pieces are fitted around the edge .


With all the flanges fitted the centre point of the base and each of the 3 upper discs is opened up to 3mm


A centre pivot of 3mm aluminium tube is added to the base encased by a styrene tube for support .


With the lower part of the mounting prepared the upper discs can be added.

The next task is to fit the 1st of 3 discs . The 1st of which is a mirror of the bottom disc onto which the mounting is built.



Around to edge is a series of what I thought where bolts or rivet heads but looking a little closer they seem slightly elongated .

I estimated that there where 20 of these on the 1s disc with 11 on the 2nd disc.

The 3rd disc is ready to be fitted and onto that will fit the centre support for the tracking radar array

The mounting is now prepared . work can begin on the side drums and the centre support.

That gun system looks like an intimidating project, but I'd guess that once you have it built, the rest of the model will be a cake walk!

Glad to see you're posting a 'how to' about this; I know a lot of people will be waiting on the edge of their seats to see your progress! One question: are you using CA to join the styrene?

Hi John thanks for your comments, when the project does eventually get started there will be a number of modelling hurdles to overcome but the Kashtan is singularly the most involved for sure . Yes CA is ideal for small parts were as LP can be a little servere .

Tutorial time, I trust you all had a relaxing day, now it�s back to getting the neurons firing.

The mounting is ready we can move on to section 1 the side drums and section 3 the centre support.
I suppose the question can be asked "why didn't I use preformed tube to make the side drums� The answer is Evergreen doesn�t make the size I need so it�s bespoke to the diameter required at 1:72nd scale. It really is as simple as it looks.


The centre support in its very basic form consists of just three pieces, the base and two sides. Please note that the tops of each side are half round .The reason for this will become clear as we move along.


The parts thus far On the out side are two discs these will be fitted to the outboard side of the side drum .At the bottom are the 2 strips to wrap round the side drums.


With the side drums prepared segmented strips are cut and placed across the width of each drum, setting one end of each strip 1mm back from the edge .




The parts thus far but with the addition of the top cover for the centre support ,


Here the top cover is attached first to one side and when set folded over the top contours of the centre support and bonded to the opposite side .
