The application of the hatch lids to the hull apertures.

The insanity continues... though its nothing new per se... having done it on Massena, Carnot and Bouvet among others previously ...



Its slow tedious work--each hatch is cut of paper and is tacked in place with matt varnish and the has a droplet of runny CA glue applied to the underside with a piece of spring thin stretched sprue-- the casualty rate of hatches falling off is about one in tenor worse...
Ships boats have been undercoated-more on that soon...

More insanely time consuming obsessive modelmaking this evening...

Made the bases for the gun in the fighting tops and added breech and barrels.

then--after careful study of photos I made the canvas fraem for the Fighting top.

This --inconvenienty--unlike on some other French pre-dreads fighting tops ...

consisted of multiple uprights--witha peripheral frame and struts leading onto the mast.

a mere four hours ( !!) of intense concentration of measuring and re-measuring--of offering up and dropping tiny strutsinumerbale times saw this fairly pleasing result!

The fighting top which had such care lavished on its awning frame has now had the canvas applied.( an dhidden the sub-structure!)

This follows my usual method of thinned white glue spanning the sections using a RIGGER watercolour artists brush.

The sections--all of which must have a closed perimeter are then infilled and spanned with the white glue

the drying of the glue is actually worth watching!

Once dry I added some pieces of stretched sprue to limit the distance of the canvas side screens.-phots show these to sometimes have been fully rolled up, halfway down--completely off or fully closed...

Once painted ( first couple coats shown here) the white glue hollows out between the spars-like .... err.... canvas!

The ships boats have also been started --some of these also had canvas covers on them ( this is two boats stacked)

About horizontal surfaces, did you get precise info about dark grey color ir is this guess work (as on your turret tops)?
I've read about first french dreadnoughts that on some places the deck was bare metal, looking darck grey. I don't know anything about earlier capital ships.

I used enamel as the base coat--and will then soften and shade-bearing in mind th ship was pretty new -
using artists watercolours as I did on Bouvet.

The turret tops dark colour is based on some oblique views of the turret tops in photos- the catwalks I surmised would have been not bare steel- bare steel surfaces were often oiled to inhibit corrosion.( legend has it with used cooking fat...?!!) so a slippery wet oiled catwalk... arghh!

but to a certain extent its guesswork-- even the model in the Paris Musee de marine does not match up to plans and photos exactly-- so I do not trust its colour scheme either! !
Only photos tell the truth! ( if one can interpret them correctly!!! LOL

the model-maker Musee "de la marine" of Paris,have often taken "shortcuts" with the details and colors. the rigor of the models is not the most absolute but,they have the merit to exist fault for having preserved the true

Modelling furiously towards Telford!

Jeanne will be completed within the next 5 days or so
--then I will return my attention to the sunken Hindenburg.

meanwhile...

mainly tiny bits and pieces... small guns on fwd bridge, binnacle, upper masts and yards, lamps on mast , awning stanchions, spare anchors

the masts and yards are very thin indeed-- as seen on on photos I added the upper mast extensions.

overview of work to date:

The boats have now all been installed, the distinctive black band round their gunwale coamings having been made of sliced down black decal striping, oars of stretched sprue have been placed inside and covers made of white glue

The aft boat cranes have had their 'arms' added--tricky to get them to all line up correctly-so many moving bits of thin wire with decidedly un-super superglue...
The fwd davits-which were of the pierced girder type were made using PE items from the WEM Askold fret

==> however to give substance to these chunkier davits I glued two pieces back to back-( x 8!) -and then after carefully cutting don and changing the profile then proceeded to infill two holes and ( then leave one clear)hole with white glue to give a fair representation of French pattern davits..... (!)

The ship carried the large anchors in the recess in the bows--as well as a spare anchor stb side- this was the excellent resin item from the kit --but which had a new shank made of layered brass strips.

Jeanne also carried 4 x stowed Admiralty pattern anchor with the folding stock stowed .

I had previously scratchbuilt these for other French 1/700 projects, but this time tried out the excellent PE items from North Star Models( bought in the UK from WEM) => attaching the flukes is a bit fiddly--but the end result is very sharp

This evening I am engaged in painting and placing crewmen aboard....

The ship is now afloat at 16-18 knots or so ....

Let's see, you have a rather large wave with a crest near the forward and aft shoulder of the hull and one between them. According to Wiki the ship is about 145m long so the wave is about 40.5m, measuring from my screen. The speed of a wave is V=sqrt(g*wavelength / (2*pi) ) = 8.4 m/s so the ship is now doing 16.3 kts. Let's not assume that the wave length is 90.5m because that would means the ship speed exceeds the maximum speed of the ship. To avoid direct disqualification, you may need to emphasize the wave crest at the centre of the ship more or your diorama could be considered physically impossible.

Perhaps the ship is benefitting from an underwater tow cable attached to the SS United States far the scene?

In that scale its very fiddly and the amount of items installed is staggering.

Same with me - talk about rasing the bar. May of these small items are beyond what I am physically able to do. If modeling were a limbo dance, JB would have lowered the bar to half an inch above ground by now ...

The model is nearing completion--at last!!!

After populating the ship with some crew-members... and adding a few more small details I at last managed a flat coat -using my favorite W& N Galeria varnish

Next is the stage I perversely enjoy most--the rigging..!

One of the attractions of Jeanne d' Arc were the six funnels -- without funnel stays... ( so I thought!)

in fairness in most photos they are not discernible... yet once I studied some large high res photos it was incontrovertible!

clearly!-

Once spotted they had to be done..

thereafter it was simply a deep breath and lots of patience -using my usual methodology
