:bash_2: Bad Brain Fart! Bad!!!

Those bad boys happen to us all blast them.

On another note, I'm really struggling as to how I am going to do my Gallery Deck bulkheads. I've been looking at every picture of real ships I can find and have also been looking at many model posts to see how others did it. I think I'm close to deciding what to do, but it occured to me that in all of the pix I have looked at of Essex class carriers, I have yet to see a life ring. Did Essex class carriers not carry them. Why aren't they on the Gallery Deck bulkheads? (At least that I have seen.) It seems like it would be a logical place to putthem. Is it just too high, meaning if you fell off, a life ring wouldn't do you any good? The GMM Essex Basic PE kit has them, so it seems like they would be somewhere. Can anybody help with this?

More on the cannister issue. Below is a clip of Bennington's plan sheet.
BenningtonPlansClip.jpg
It clearly says, "Cover for slide for smoke screen Tank 13." This, along with the cannisters, could imply that the cannisters are filled with smoke from Tank 13, at an upper level and then slid down the tube and are then stored until needed. Does this sound logical?

With a davit overhead, that makes sense.

I'll look into the life ring issue later, but I don't recall any off the top of my (brain farting) head.

Lets consider.
At Battle Stations, everyone wears their life jackets anyway.

The flight deck types are supposed to wear their life belts.
Life Belts.jpg
Somewhere in the History Link photos is another shot of guys in the gallery with these belts, watching unrep or something.

I remember these belts from 1950's surplus stores. The exterior was nylon like and there were tubes inside and the little CO2 cylinders (2) for inflation. I think these guys are wearing them inside out because the tubes that inflate and the CO2 devices should be visible. Another little piece of history I should have picked up when I had the chance, along with floater net floats.

But I think you're right, if you fall from the flight deck and hit the water anyway out of the verticle, you have multiple problems.

FOUND IT!!!

Thanks Tracy and Russ!

Great stuff, and the pix you provided, Russ, start to answer a question I am going to have at some point, and that is how to paint the deck crew. I see now that however I paint them, they need to have light brown waist stripes to represent the life belts. Also, in the 1st pic, and in others I have seen, they wear colored skull caps and shirts that I'm sure are color coded somehow. My guess is my crew directing the planes for take off will need some color coding but I haven't even started looking into this issue, but then, I guess I just did.

Cool Tracy! I thought that there was probably something like this out there. What about during WWII?

While we are talking of head gear, according to my Dad, the white classic 'sailor' hat that was issued in boot camp was promptly dyed dark blue during war operations. (WWII)

Well I certainly did not know that little tid-bit, but it make since. With them white, they might as well draw circles on them because they would be great targets.

Another bit of knowledge gained from this site.

Thanks Timm! :thumbs_up_1:

With this information, I think I am in the market for some more crew members. I see that Eduard has painted Aircraft Carrier figures in 2 styles, flat and "3-D". Are the 3-D figures worth the extra $1.60, or is it just as easy to 3-D them yourself?

I think the 3-D have fronts and backs are appropriately painted. If you did it yourself they wouldn't necessarily be that way. Besides, at this point, what's a $1.60?

:lol_4: Good point!
I've just never seen them and the pictures of them aren't very good.
And the trouble with both of them is that all shirt colors are waving their arms as if they were directing planes. If this job is for yellow shirt guys, I wonder why Eduard has all colors doing it?

Well, the arms can be bent to a certain extent.
The plane captain would be signalling the pilot for engine start and testing flaps.

What is needed is a WW2 flight deck operations training film

Oh Man!

Following Russ' suggestion, I typed "WW2 flight deck operations training film" in Google and the 2nd link I clicked on led me to these short videos:

"The Aircraft Carrier: King of the Pacific"
http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=9dR3h2HdnBQ

Modern Carrier Ops.

http://www.dump.com/2011/04/16/one-us-a ... ies-video/

and then to a classic film "The Fighting Lady"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WixCu061ZEM

The latter is an hour long film that anyone modeling Essex Class Carriers MUST WATCH!!!

It's simply awesome, start to finish.

I want to add to my last post to stress that if you are building an Essex class carrier, stop what you are doing, grab a cup of coffee, and WATCH THIS FILM.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WixCu061ZEM

It will be the best hour you will spend preapring for your build. Pretty much every question or topic that I have asked or brought up, and several things others brought up, is in the film, the flags, the bombs, the blue dyed hats, the color coded shirts (OK, not counting the guys only in their boxers), the movie theater, the swim break, the gun details, and many more.

Thanks Russ!

I went to the link to the package you posted and was then able to find the 2nd video listed in the package, "Flight Deck Crews: Landing & Re-Spotting Aircraft" on You Tube. It was really good too. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find the last one " Flight Deck Crews: Catapulting from an Aircraft Carrier ", but it looks like it's about launching from CVEs anyway, which is fascinating, but not as helpful to my modeling effort.
