Re: Calling all DKM Bismarck & Tirpitz fans
I need to look up the exact wording, but I think I took it from the so-called ABB Nr. 31 (Allgemeine Baubestimmungen, lit. General Building Regulation, and #31 defines the paints).
At least it states for bare steel decks a specific paint (Tr.D 59 matching RAL 7016 (or 53, depending on which issue of the ABB-31), non-skid paint for decks), which is applied not only onto the deck but also a certain way up the bulkheads. I believe this stripe of non-skid paint comes in handy as well when swabbing the wooden decks. This is clearly visible on the well-known photos of Bismarck's open bridge decks (the ones with the missing wooden crates).
Oh, and there are colour photos showing that ... (with something black in it for comparison, those photographers back then must have had future model builders in mind).
Happy painting ~ Olaf!

Re: Calling all DKM Bismarck & Tirpitz fans
Hello, I'm new to the forum, thanks for all the interesting info. If I may I would like to ask some questions on colours and would be interested on your opinions. I am modelling the Bismarck 1941 Baltic camo.
1. Was the main mast black or dark grey/light grey above the rudder indicator ?
2. Were the searchlight covers on the funnel left grey or painted white with the stripe ?
I have looked through many photos but can't decide. Many thanks for your help

Hi!
I received now my Bismarck 1/200 from Trumpeter, but I'm in doubt regarding the barrel dimensions.
Can somebody help me give me the dimensions A, B, C and D in centimeters (scale 1/200) in the figure below? I believe that there is a mistake on the cannon dimension.

Picture from book Anatomy of the ship, Bismarck
Thank you

Re: Calling all DKM Bismarck & Tirpitz fans
I bought barrels for my Bismarck 1/200 and comparing with the barrels that came with the kit, they are completely different. My intention is discover which is more accurate. See picture below, the barrel on the top came with the kit and the other one I bought on the Ebay as part of one set of barrels.

Converting the size you informed to 1/200 scale (in centimeters) the dimensions are:
A=0,47 cm
B= 1,12 cm
C= 1,89 cm
D= 3,02 cm
Trumpeter barrel:
A=0,5 cm
B= 1,49 cm (not match)
C= 1,89 cm
D= 3,1 cm
Total length 7,5 cm.
Ebay barrel:
A= 0,8 cm
B= 0,9 cm
C= 1,6 cm
D= 3,3 cm
Total length 7 cm.
So the Trumpeters barrel, despite the dimension B, looks like more accurate.
DANK!

Re: Calling all DKM Bismarck & Tirpitz fans
I'm not sure, but I think you may be misidentifying some of the steps in the barrels when you're comparing the plans to the aluminum one.

Based on this photo. It looks like Step A in the drawn plans you posted is simply painted on the real turret and not an actual dimensional step so to say. While Step A as identified on your trumpeter barrel is actually the step that is inside the turret itself, the end of which should be more or less flush with the turret armor opening, which would not show up on your drawn plans as it is inside the turret. This would account for your B dimension being too long on the aluminum barrel in that its both A and B combined.
At least thats what I can gather. The Trumpeter barrel is IMO the much more accurate cosmetically of the two.
Hope that helps
Dana

The step between A and B is a transition from a straight cylindrical section to a very small taper; it is not paint.
It appears that both barrels aren't any good?

Well, I wouldn't say the Trumpeter barrels aren't any good. All the other dimensions seem to be correct. All you really need to make them perfect is access to a lathe. Measure out the length of A (the cylinder) and subtract that from length B (the tapered section), and just turn down that small section of B so that B ends with the transition to a cylinder (A) instead of a taper all the way to the step that's inside the turret. That should then make the barrel correct.EJFoeth wrote: It appears that both barrels aren't any good?
But then again, none of that really matters if you're going to do blast bags as they cover up this section anyway.

In German its "Bgelklse". Frankly translated something like "clamp-fairlead". Sorry, native german speaker^^
