From a plastic model perspective, is the Chines Type 33 the same externally as the Soviet Romeo class submarine? Can the HB kit be made as a Romeo class Submarine, or, if not, what are the main differences? Thanks in advance.

Yes. I have a set of Soviet Romeo plans, and they look pretty much identical to the Chinese Type 033. The bow sonar may be somewhat different (the Romeo bow looks a bit more compact), but basically the same design. The Chinese modified their Type 033 boats as time went on with indigenous equipment.
