Just Released - "Shattered Sword" by J. Parshall &
Revisits the Battle of Midway from the Japanese side using excellent, new primary source material and overturns some myths & misconceptions. Lots of input from many noted historians and experts. Big book, very well researched, thorough and reasoned. For more, go to:

I think if you look at the "Myth" page you'll find the genesis of most of them is (sadly) in Lord's Incredible Victory. I can't find them quickly breezing through Morison's Vol IV: Coral Sea, Midway and Submarine Operations.
If an unfriendly power had attempted to impose on America the mediocre educational performance that exists today, we might well have viewed it as an act of war.

I got my copy and have looked it over a bit. I must give it high marks for taking on a subject many people thought was not open to much more study. It is said that GOOD history can only be written about 50 years after an event, that being the time it takes for the people with a stake in the history to be either gone or too old to care about having that history make them look good. So now we can look at Midway without the need to please the powers that be. The myths section is brilliant and tackles the things that need to be looked at. If the most important naval battle of the 20th century interests you, you have got to have this book!
I think it does for the IJN what the first volume of "The First Team" did for the USN carrier forces.

This book is not the first account from the Japanese perspective; I wonder what cross referencing the two books would reveal.
Fuchida was the air group commander on the Pearl Harbour raid and was aboard one of the IJN carriers at Midway (AKAGI?). He was grounded on the day of the battle with some sort of illness, but witnessed much of the critical moment of the attack.

Fuchida's account was erroneous to the point of willful lying and condemmed as such in Japan over 30 years ago. Unfortunately, as his was one of the earliest accounts in English, and he was respected (by the Allies) for his roles (wartime, postwar cooperation), his account became the basis for much of what is written in Engliah.
Within the text, the authors clearly and specifically point out these major errors/ommissions and correct the record, with significant changes to the narrative , save for the final outcome.
It will change your perspective about the battle.
