There is also a large-scale (contemporary?) model of her in the Museo Storico Navale in Venice: http://www.maritima-et-mechanika.org/ma ... zia-1.html. It presumably shows her as built.

Apologies for the image quality, but the lighting in the room in the museum is rather dim.

Re: Regina Maria Pia, 1/700 scale, from scratch.
Hi all.
had a little spare time to dedicate to the Regina Maria Pia, so i added a little rigging and...
well, black ship with white stripe and yellow funnels and masts...toooo plain.
So i decided to take a little "poetic license" and to add...a gran gala of flags! Used the bobby elements decal, they have some minor errors that has to be corrected but after all they are quite decent. only the green of the flag is a little too light, but that's it.
also added a lifeboat hanging from her davits and the fabric stripes which are visible in some pictures.
next stage: finish rigging, add the crew and some colour touch ups...
and finish to rise the gran gala

work continues, i really hope to finish the model before the end of the year...
have a nice day/night/whatever,
Cheers from Italy

Re: Regina Maria Pia, 1/700 scale, from scratch.
well done Stefano!
Model overall looks good ! Bravo
Dressed overall = Flag gala... great idea!
( did it on my Wien- and loved the effect!!)
http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/sh ... index.html
A few thoughts if I may..?
On your next sailing rigged model if you are unable to make or buy tapered yards- make then undersize - ie the size of the ends of the yards and make up the apparent thickness midships on the back once attached to the masts building up using stetched sprue, and disguise on the fwd and lower face with the white glue sails.
also -I would be inclined to continue the flag gala to the mizzen mast down to the stern
It will - in my view- make a more balanced appearance....
But- comments aside great model and great effort!

Re: Regina Maria Pia, 1/700 scale, from scratch.
Hi all, and thanks for the nice words and -expecially- for criticism and suggestions.
the flag gala will be obviously finished, i'm just preparing it on a separate rigging strand to apply at the end of the rigging process.
for the masts - i really don't like their appearance, for the next project i'm already working to achieve a better result...and to learn soldering. don't like the superglue, they snapped off a couple of time while rigging it.
hope to post pictures of the finished thing asap
:D
Cheers!

Re: Regina Maria Pia, 1/700 scale, from scratch.
The well known and feared "modeler's luck". or Karma. or whatever.
i just bought a (fantastic/phabolous/great/epic/insert most liked superlative) book, "le navi di linea italiane dal 1861 al 1875" (italian ships of the line from 1861 to 1975) which covers the evolutions of italian battleships from the only and unique italian ship of the line (Re Galantuomo) to the last of the masted ironclads (Principe Amedeo class)
OBVIOUSLY, i dare to say, there is a comprehensive and detailed section dedicated to the Regina Maria Pia class.
I thought i was nearing the end of the project...well, wrong forecast.
My work was based on guessing made upon pictures and a really few bad quality drawings spotted here and there on the net, so having a quite precise documentation in my hands is quite...well..frustrating
I quite spotted the hull, only the stern area is a little too much sloped, but i can live with this. i need to close half on the gunports on the sides, becouse the covedered wheelhouse appeared only after the reduction of the gunports.
Masts: overall they are spotted on (dimensionally) but there are some errors in painting and positioning.
I placed the funnel too much forward, and so the covered wheelhouse. I don't know if i can move the thing backwards without smashing the wheelhouse. afterall, its 1 mm.
Air vents: need to add one on the forcastle between the bow gunports (they still existed at the time of the picture) and at least one behind the funnel, which needs strands and apparently a cap grill (can be seen only on a (nice) coloured profile on the book).
Need to add searchlights platform on the aft "superstructure". quite hard task, but they are clearly there and are a quite prominent feature.
Anchor cranes: need to add these on the bow, and to add two platform (rapid fire gun??? salute gun??) upon the cranes top.
Antitorpedo nets: they were of the "Lerm" type, so need to find pictures of the real thing and to find a way to make these in '700.
Stern gun: still present, need to build the "barbette" and the gun.
So...back to work, the road to the end is loooooong and hard.
cheers!

Oh, that is annoying to find good material that late!
Where you have found that book? I am searching "Esploratori italiani" of the same series, but I cannot find it.

Have been to Venice in August, re-visited the Museo Navale and took some more detail-pictures of the model of the REGINA MARIA PIA: http://www.maritima-et-mechanika.org/ma ... zia-1.html

Wefalk, your photographer skills are definitely higher than mine!!!!!!!
Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.....it's been a long long time from my last update, and finally i have something to show!
I seriously think that i'll NEVER call this ship FINISHED! But, here is the old Ironclad at her actual state!
Dressed overall!

a lot of touchups sill needed, some details need to be reworked or added, and need to add the crew.
A little bit of "self-criticism".
I'm unsatisfied with the result of the deck. It's quite nice from the pictures, but actually is nothing like what i was aiming.
Masts: tooooooooo think, as per the yardarms, next time i'll try to taper'em all!
Boat davits: too simple, need to think to some other way to build them.
Anti torpedo netting booms: too simple, need to detail them up a bit, but i don't know what to add and how.
Deck fittings: seriously thinking of removing and redoing - pure s@*#!
However, this little ship took back to home a bronze in ships, master category at the "red devils awards" in Thiene, italy
cheeeeeeeeeers from italy,
Stefano
