1/200 Bismarck May 1941 by trumpeter

On Bismarck the bridge deck wasn't planked. There are pictures with wooden gratings in the front part of the deck and the rest was steel and there's at least one picture with the entire deck covered with wooden gratings.

If you have a photo please show it. The wreck theres is too much damage, sediment and not too forget that half the deck isn't even there anymore.

Hello Bob,

I think we would all love to see any pics you have of this almighty ship. It would appear that this new Trumpeter kit has raised people's interest in Bismarck once again.
However, I think we should carry on this debate away from Antons wonderful build thread. Could you possibly post them in the "calling all Bismarck fans" section with a title something like "catwalk debate"? It would be great to see them and I'm sure the debate will carry on.

Thanks Nigel. Yeah if there was a photo clearly showing the catwalk that would e brilliant! I've made up the cradles not the catwalks. This is a section that AOTS has missed completely. There's no detailed view of the catapult and it's mechanism let alone the catwalk. The overall plan shows it being added in 1941 but again no detail what so ever. I personally like the look of having the catwalks there... More detail! but if she didn't have them or atleast a photo showing them I won't add them.

Well, there's always a problem showing pictures. I croped it very much and reduced its size. I hope you still can see the gratings. I will delete it after a while.

Nobody will like it, but I'm afraid some wooden cratings need to get scratchbuilt...

some progress on the bridge structure, conning tower and turret mast. Each section is yet to be glued down as there are still a few small items required for each.

Still shocked at your rapid progress! I'm getting jealous... I'm still waiting for more PE options to hit the market.

Your bridge superstructure just looks awesome though! The detail is several orders of magnitude above what the basic kit provides and man does it show!

^ this. I have a strict personal rule about not paying more for a detail set than the actual kit costs (all at once, at least!)

The KA set is very nice but too much money for the likes of me. It's great to enjoy vicariously though!

Luckily having some time off has left me with a few hours a day to spend on her. Still not enough time though!
Oh you can get the KA stuff as separate sets, decks only, armament set, mast detail set and of course the base PE set.

After building 1/72 scale warships, I'm loving this PE stuff! yes, its expensive... but this Bismarck so far hasn't come near the costs of some of my scratch build warships... I am loving this scale though, big enough I can see what I'm working on yet don't have to go overboard with the detail. I've seen some smaller scale models with so much stuff crammed in it's either over scale or simply distracts from the model. Saying that I've also seen some 1/72 models and larger with too little detail. I guess like anything you need to find a happy medium.

Oh and cody, the sepia is just the light in the room. I'm shooting in ambient light, and the light source is quite yellow so hence the light cast. I prefer to take photo's during the day as I can open up the house and let the natural light come in but with the camera just sitting there

On the contrary... I'm a bit relieved I'm not the first online builder to forge ahead on it anymore! I'm taking notes... especially on the errors we're finding as everyone progresses on their builds. You deserve extra kudos for being a pathfinder!

I'm glad you're taking notes of the kit's ooopsies. I envision something like we did for the Dragon 1/350 Scharney. Did this ever went online here?

@ Perth ~ It's quite challenging keeping your pace. I hope it is not to late to give notice about the slightly wrong shape of the deck housing the Admiral's bridge. This deck was not symetrical as depicted by the kit. On either side of the Admiral's bridge you have the 3m rangefinders sitting in tubs on deck extensions. The aft edge of the starboard extension was angled aft, and not hitting the superstructure at right angle as on port side. This is just a minor detail though...
I have no measurments, but good plans do show this (and bad ones and pirate copies on accident).

Thank you for the photo Herr Nilsson. Very very helpful and educational. So would it be appropriate to paint the deck as steel and then place the grating on top (the steel showing through the grating? Might be too small in this scale)

I can't speak for Anton but I'm open to ideas and constructive criticism on my build... though I might decide some things are beyond my ability to improve on and/or just aren't worth fixing in the end.

But if we all collaborate we'll all end up with better builds! Lavish praises only accomplish so much, after all.

But this is Anton's build so let us know if you want us to count rivets on ya or not!
