I thought I would share this with everyone. I emailed Blohm & Voss about two months ago looking for a rigging diagram for Bismarck.

Today, I open up my email, and to my surprise, they had sent me this:



Hope some of you find it useful for your Bismarck build, or just for it's historical significance.

I have the original full size PDF file if anyone would like it emailed to them.

Looks like Blohm & Voss is so frustrated with the continuous demand for drawings they start emailing the Harhaus planset for free. Sound like a clear violation of intellectual property rights to me.

Well ... I'm not a lawyer, but who has intellectual property rights really about building / construction drawings of Bismarck really?

Who built Bismarck => Blohm & Voss Yard
Who made construction plans and drawings => Blohm & Voss (+ others involved in project, i.e. Krupp for guns etc.)
Who is owner and has all rights about any original drawings about Bismarck? => Blohm & Voss

So who the hack is Harhaus then? If they sell copies of original drawings they must have an OK from Blohm & Voss to do so, what they have for sure. When Blohm & Voss starts now to send for free, Harhaus as in my opinion no legal rights against.

Unless, of course, Harhaus drew those plans themselves based on photos, without copying from B&V's original plans.

I thought it was obvious from my post that those drawings were made by Harhaus and not Blohm & Voss. Blohm & Voss did not make construction drawings with flags and the mix of two types of 105mm guns; this is a model builders planset. If you don't know Harhaus then you haven't done your Bismarck homework properly.

I am a wooden period ship modeller who is currently just returning to plastic ship models, I have zero knowledge on Bismarck and I would like to get hold of a contemporary/primary plan set of her for future use. Could the Bismarck experts in this site please direct me as to how I could get hold of the original Blohm & Voss plans? If this is not possible, has anyone had the chance to compare the so called Harhaus plan-set and verify just how faithful it is to the original plans? Thanks very much.

Still, these days we can't call a Tatra a Tatra or a Dodge a Dodge without having to pay for that. That's why more and more we see models with generic names. That's why we have a "Long Range Desert Group Patrol Car", or why the internet is full of people in the business that were warned by the MoD that they couldn't use the RAF roundel without authorization. And model companies can't just make an F-22 and call it "Lockheed-Martin F-22 Raptor" without the authorization of Lockheed-Martin, so I'm not sure where we stand, concerning who can or cannot make plans of Bismarck without the authorization of those that hold the original plans and contracts, in this case B&V.

These acurate information are very important.

I think that some intellectual properties are sold for trade use with permission, and unauthorized copies:
1. Or they are unauthorized.................
2. Maybe Inaccurate..................

I have some another doubt and ask here please if someone can help.

In the rudder angle indicator, located in the mainmast of Bismarck, in the rear portion is a round part....the book AOTS points that as a HAND WINCH.......

And my questions:

1. is the book wrong or my translation, or this part is a HAND WHEEL ( emergency steering)?
2. If it is correct and the part is a HAND WINCH, is it to elevate cargo? What for?
3. If it is correct and the part is a HAND WINCH, is it a power to hand actuate in rudders and steer the ship in emergency?
4. Or what is its function?

I had googled a lot, and looked for that answer in a few books, but got none.........so I come here and ask some help.

That's no hand wheel, but part of the signal lantern installation. It's called "Nachtfahrtanzeiger" (NFA).

In addition to Herr Nilssons reply: It was a device that shows the speed of the vessel to the vessel(s) behind, by means of a combination of parts of the middle cross lit with and without the circle around it:

I'll be back here to bring some more talk about this equipment, but not now.

And some conclusion: if AOTS points that as a HAND WINCH, we can state that author made a mistake..........that is so sorry.

Was that for use only at night periods or during day too? I saw some pics of models showing the Nachtfahrtanzeiger ( the name is a good point to make researches...) installed in german ships and it shows lights..........

Nachtfahrtanzeiger traslates as Night Drive Indicator in english.........

the NFA was only used at night. In daytime a so called "Stoppball" was used. In this picture of Scharnhorst one can see a part of the NFA:

Continuing the discussion on the Catapult catwalks here as to not have Antons build thread go any further off course

Here you can clearly see the added supports for the catapult. Oddly enough I don't see the catapult itself in the photo.

Bismarck's catapult was damaged on February 27th and replaced by a catapult from Tirpitz on May 30th 1941. The picture was taken during that time (March 14th - 17th).

i see the supports easy enough... but no sign of the catwalks. Or do you guys disagree? Is it still safe to say the catwalks were planned but not yet added to Bismarck.
