Any particular reason why you wouldn't just start with Tamiya's Shinano kit?

No particular reason, other than something to challenge myself with.

Would it just be easier to get the Tamiya Shinano and redo the Yamato?

What do you think? Considering even the hull of Yamato and Shianao are different in several ways.

Yeah I just thought it would have been a cool project to do, but it was just one of my (many) crazy ideas that popped into my head. I know what you mean by that... looked over some ones scratch built Shinano and compared the hulls of the two. To much unneeded work when I can just base the build off the Tamiya kit.

Has anyone posted images of Tamiya's latest 1/350 version of Yamato yet. I am interested in getting the kit but it looks very expensive.

I am building the Nichimo 1/200 Yamato with PE, brass barrels and wooden deck. I am also going to update my old Tamiya 1/350 that I built in 1994. I am going to built them to Yamato's final mission.

I am trying to find out what is the correct number of 25 mm guns and were they are placed. I have seen so many different setups on internet, so I am not sure what is correct. I have also seen the shields around 25 mm guns on deck round, 6 and 8 corners around and also halv round. Anyone who knows or have some info, photos or drawings of the lates resurce on this manner ?

I also have a spare 1/200 Yamato that I am planning to rebuild to Shinano.

So without searching throughout all of the past postings in this thread I would like to ask for an opinion based on current kit availability in 1/700. If I was to add a Yamato and/or Musashi to my collection should I buy one of the newer Fujimi releases or the venerable Tamiya? There are Tamiya kits to be had with a variety of added details in the box on Ebay as well as a few of the newer Fujimi kits. I look forward to hearing a consensus of opinion on the subject.........and no I dont have $300.00 plus for that "ultimate" Yamato I've see pics of here. Thanks in advance.

Which of the current crop of Yamato kits in 1/700 is the best in terms of accuracy and detail. I've looked over the Fujimi offerings, and they don't look that great.

Looking at the instructions, there is nowhere the detail that you would find on other new Fujimi kits.

Tamiya's and Fujimi's offerings in 1/700by today standards are old. But you can combine both of them(they are cheap models) and judge by your self what you want to use into a nice kit by adding some Fine Molds parts and after market PE's.
Also Fujimi has offered version with PE sets both for IJN Yamato and IJN Musashi.

Some of you might remember that some time ago the Works in Progress section of MW showed a build of the 1/350 old tool Tamiya Yamato by the Swiss modeler Mima, which, apart from being a fantastic build, used aftermarket correction parts from a Japanese gentleman called Mr Ichida or Ishida. Those resin parts were top quality. I was intrigued and managed to obtain some from Japan, and I kept an eye out for him. Last year, I noticed that Mr Ichida is now trading under the brand name "Chrysanthemum & Sword", with his products being available from the Hong Kong online hobby shops. His latest product is a small PE and resin set for the new tool Tamiya Yamato, which, interestingly, does not overlap with the Pontos superset.

I have now begun my build of the kit and I thought the followers of this thread might enjoy seeing the instructions of this set, as I am sure it has been well researched. It has also raised a couple of questions which those of you with more knowledge than I might be able to answer. Unfortunately for me, it seems that the Japanese KNOW where every part goes without needing details!
This is the cover of the set

First question: Where are the ventilators in the last picture above located?
Second question (not related to this set) Do the additional 25mm triples, such as the ones located in the tubs of this set, have side shields, as provided by the Pontos set? I had the impression that triples in tubs (splinter shields?) had no additional armor on the gun mount itself.

Many thanks and my appreciation to the regular contributors of this thread, including Bucketfoot-Al, Senkan, Chuck and Atma - the information provided is invaluable.
Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything.

This has me stumped, they actually look like windows.

But according to the text they are ventilators?

I thought they might be these: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10001678z7/70/7

But they cant be.

Anthony,

I did not used them on my build. It's not that easy to install them properly on the ships hangars without cutting out a large section.
The part with four windows, or air vents has to be installed on the port side of the ship. Tamiya made a mistake regarding the openings, 4 ports, 5 starboard.
I try to reactivate my old Yamato build to show you more pictures of Ishidas new parts, ok???

Hi, has anyone built the rather small 1/1200 Yamato by Revell? I'm roughly 50% through the build and would like to see a completed version just for some reference.

Also, I have found one reference to how to make the mast that is missing, but does anybody know if it can be bought ready made or build? Or if it's better scratch building, anybody got any good instructions on how to make one?

Some pictures of progress so far..I still have to mod the rear range finder as it's wrong on this kit.

A lot of flash on this kit, removed from the hull, deck and main guns. The superstructure is built and painting some small parts is next after the WEM paints arrived the other day.pondering drilling out the funnel for that little bit of detail.

Any kind of decal on a blue paper is waterslide. So just wet it, wait a minute or so, then slide it onto the plane. There should be instructions on how to use them in the manual or, in some kits, on the back of the decal sheet itself.

The flags are just cut, fold, and glue.

Yes, cut around the decal you want and then dip it in water.

So, here I'm back with some more pictures of Ishidas parts. As you can see, these pedestal like parts belong into the positions of the open Type 89 Twin AAs.
