Hey All,

Ray Bean is off visiting his parents about 6 hours away from where he lives.They live in a rural part of Canada, & have no internet access there. He left the middle of Dec., & told me he would be gone for a couple/few months. Myself & my cousin were in Norfolk for CVN-65 Inactivation Week, & worked it out with Ray to be "shooter" team for him to help with an upcoming DVD/CD of CVN-65 in her final configuration. So, I'm sure he'll contact me when he gets back so I can send the CD of pics & other memorabilia he had me get for him...

Also, I have another pic from the Hanger Bay, that shows the entire doors in the background. I have to resize the pic before I can post it. The file seems to be too big to post on here...

So, my cousin had the pic from Hanger Bay #1 already resized so it would download better. Anyway, the pic has the HB doors in the background, & shows the mural on them. Just ignore me in the pic & our tour guide for the day. LOL!! We took a lot of pics on our tour of CVN-65. So, if anyone is looking for something specific, I might have it...

The mural on the Conflag doors back in the early 1980s spanned all six panels. I need to find someone that has a photo of that type to keep in period with my build.

There is a pic in the "The USS Enterprise, in Detail & Scale" book by Bert Kinzey, that shows the mural from the 80's that covered all six panels. Its not the best pic, & its Black & White. I'll try to scan it and post it hear. The book also shows a seperate mural next to the doors on the starboard side of the hanger bay of CV-6. I'll try to scan that as well. But, I can say for sure that the CV-6 mural was not there on my tour during Inactivation week. But I have no idea if there were any murals in HB#2. As it was closed off from the tours, due to it being used for staging of stuff for various receptions on board & the inactivation ceremony...

If you have the Detail & Scale book, look on pages 4 & 54 for the mural pics...

And yes, White Ensign Model does have copies of the Ray D. Bean Enterprise photo CD. I should have it in a couple of days.

I was also on the 82'-83' West Pac; maybe we can swap "memories", LOL I'm sure mine are getting sketchy too. I just recently began working on my Enterprise again...I got it in 1984, the day it was available. It was about half built when I moved to Washington in 1987...it didn't survive. But thanks to the AWESOME people at Tamiya America I have been able to get all the replacement parts I need to start over. BTW I worked in AIMD Airframes at the aft end of the hanger.

How much reading have you done about the Cold War after you got off active duty? You know that we were damn near ordered to start WWIII with the flyovers of Sakhalin during FLEETEX83 right? If you put things together our, flyovers were part of the reason that KAL007 was shot down by the Soviets with 269 civilians killed. I have not been able to shake that little tidbit of history even after all this time.

That aside..... damn what a boat! Right out of the yards, and factory fresh!

It wasn't until my wife got the Tamiya model that I started to notice all the coincidences on some things. I was born in 1960, the same year the Enterprise was launched. I earned a SENSO qualification with VS-37, and the ONLY time VS-37 flew off the Enterprise was on the 82-83 cruise. Lastly, if you look at the painting on the top of the box for the model, it is the black, white and yellow tail markings of VS-37 in the painting that you see. What are the odds of the artist selecting a photo to recreate with the tail markings of a squadron that only deployed once off that ship? Hell having a wife that would purchase such a gift for their husband is pretty rare too.

I was just informed by White Ensign Models that Ray D. Bean has been recovering from some serious medical issues dating back to the first of the year. Neither party has been able to estimate a date as to when orders for the Enterprise DVD from Ray D. Bean/Stillmotion Photography will be able to be made available again.

Sorry it took so long to reply. I definitely do read a lot about "the good ole' days"; I read somewhere that the Russians had been tipped off about FLEETEX 83' by "Johnny Walker" (it may have been from a Midway bio). If you remember when we were up there in October 82' the Ruskies went nuts; even scrambling Backfire Bombers for the first time. I've got quite a few shots of Bears and Badgers as well as the Kara Class Cruiser that was shadowing us. However when we returned the following spring... they really pretty much ignored us. I'm fairly sure Flight 007 had nothing to do w/ us.

The CO of AIMD had about a 5' X 3' framed painting on his wall same as the Tamiya box. When I first saw the box art I laughed cause "hey I've seen that picture before"!!! You're right VS-37 was there even though Bert Kinzey got it wrong in his book (He lists VS-21 for 9/82).

I've been working on my Enterprise's Island for more than a month now...LOL; hope your ready...there's a lot of scratch-building a head!!!!

Need some help regarding Bomb Jettisoning Ramps on the 1968 CVAN-65....did she have em, and if so, where exactly?
My Floating Drydock plans (which I believe are of the original/planned '62 ship) shows 3 of them, but I'll be darned if I can find them in any of my reference photos, of which I have many.
Kinzey shows one in his book, but doesn't say where exactly its at (and thats the 80's ship). Furthermore my GMM supercarrier decal set has the red & yellow warning stripe decals for them. So I know they existed at some point in her history.
The FD plans show 1 on the port side near the end of cats 3 & 4. 2 on the starboard side, 1 just aft of the superstructure, and 1 just forward of Elevator #1 on the angled section between Elv #1 and the long narrow cats 1 & 2 bow section.
Is this the correct number and locations for the "68 Enterprise?

IIRC the bomb jettison ramps were only installed after the fire of Jan 69. Prior to that there were none.

I know this is a long shots but if anyone has a 1:350 Trumpeter USS Enterprise CV-65 kit then can you please answer these questions:

- how many models come with the kit
- how easy is the kit to assemble
- do the models just snap together or do they need to be glued
- do you have to apply decals on the ship and if so do they give you them in the kit
- do they supply decals for the models
- do you need to be good at assembling things to make the kit
- does the kit need glue or other materials or does it just snap together
- what material are they made of
- what's their quality level compared to other carriers, and what's the models quality level

If you can't answer these, but know a good forum which can, then just post it in the thread. Thanks.

The Trumpeter/Mini-Hobby Models kit of CVN 65 is a reduced-quality knock-off of the original Tamiya kit. Trumpeter/MHM has produced the knock-off in two versions: one identical to the Tamiya kit, and one with Enterprise's original "beehive" island. The accuracy of the latter is not very good.

That being said, to answer your questions:
1. Each kit comes with one (1) model of the Enterprise.
2. Depends on how much experience you have. Not a lot of parts, but expect some fit problems due to lower quality of the copy.
3. Glue and paint is required. With one or two exceptions, there are no "snap-tite" kits for ships.
4. Yes, but I'm not sure if the Trumpeter/MHM copied the exact same decals in the Tamiya original.
5. There are aftermarket decals available if the kit ones are not good enough for you.
6. Probably? It certainly helps to have some level of familiarity with putting things together...
7. See 3.

So I have been traveling and not really doing much ship building lately. So I went looking for the 1/700 Cyber Hobby CVAN-65 kit and there is no trace of it. No comming soon or any other evidence that there was ever going to be one. So anyone know what happened?

So, what is the word on this kit? Seems way over due from the anouncement.
