Calling all Ticonderoga-class (CG-47) fans

I was fortunate enough to be given a tour of the USS Doyle yesterday for work (FFG-39), and was curious about the white rectangle and line across the bow.
Can someone explain it's purpose on these Frigates? (would they land a helo on the sloped bow??)

Those are VERTREP or Vertical Replenishment markings. That's when a helo picks up a load of supplies via its belly hook and carries them to the ship. The rectangle indicates where to drop the load and the dashed line is a line up line for the helo.

Was looking for a 350 Ticonderoga kit. Are there any that are better than the Dragon kit? When I built the Vicksburg out of the Mobil Bay kit there was some seriously frustrating fit problems. Now I'm not even seeing that kit around. My son just got transferred to the Monetary, and I'm going to need to add one or two to my stash.

It's the same kit, but have you tried looking for the Italeri Gettysburg CG 64 version?

There's no better plastic version - Trumpeter/Mini-Hobby Models made a crappy copy of the Dragon kit, but bad-upon-mediocre is...bad.

Had any of the Tico's had the proposed side bulge armor applied to the hull? If so, which ships and are there any pics showing it?

I am new to Ship model making. I am trying to make models of all three ships I served on.
The USS Yorktown CG-48, USS Arleigh Burke DDG-51 (Plankowner) and the USS Vella Gulf CG-72 (Plankowner). My daughter bought me the USS Yorktown CG 48 model for XMAS (bless her heart) made by Cyber Hobby. I am going to buy the USS Arleigh Burke DDG-51 kit made by Trumpeter however I need to find a later version of the Ticonderoga Class Cruiser to make the USS Vella Gulf CG-72. I have heard about the Dragon/Italeri kit #5554 for the USS Gettysburg CG-64 or the Dragon USS Mobile Bay CG-59. I also heard about the the Trumpeter USS Mobile Bay kit # 80702 but it is an old kit. (All in 1/350 scale).
I have also heard and read about some issues with the quality of these kits in regard to fitting/alignment, if anyone could direct me to threads/articles about how to overcome these problems those would be appreciated as well. Unfortunately, due to suffering a TBI while on active duty, I am no longer able to work and I have plenty of time on my hands to learn how to build these right, that being said it also limits my budget but I am willing to do what it takes to learn (air brushing, fitting techniques, etc....). Hello all

While looking for a master to cast some VLS panels for a potential 2015 Wisconsin I ran across an E-Bay deal that advertised "Bastelschrott" which actually was a Italeri Gettysburg and an Academy Oliver Hazard Perry. They are started but not much and the hulls are done nicely. No paint yet! All in all I was thinking ..."into the spare part box" but when I opened the boxes I found that each kit also contained a full WEM PE set! So I guess mid to long term at least the Gettysburg might be done. Now starting to research those new ships, I am normally more focused on WWII, I found those fantastic pics of the Port Royal after her slight accident. Now that blue belly is a killer! It adds to the already futuristic apperance of the whole design so my build...once started/continued will be a blue bottom vessel. Now which blue belly can be easiest being build from the Gettysburg, please? Also looking at the dry dock pics it seems liker the keel of the kit is way to short. Has this been addressed by anybody yet and are there good pics that show the real size?
First thing though will be to get some silicone and resin to copy those VLS panels. Maybe one day (after re-commisioning) I will have a BB-64 accompanied by a "Blue Belly"

So you know, the blue and green anti-fouling paint that was tested aboard the Port Royal and a number of other ships...it has been dropped. It does not work as well as the rest stuff, so the Navy has shifted back to red, fleet wide.

G'day people,

I am getting ready to build the Italeri boxing of Dragon's 1/350 Tico. The Italeri boxing includes decals for CG-64 "Gettysburg", which is fine by me. I have a few questions though as I am primarily a jet guy.

I have been browsing on-line images of Ticonderoga class CG's and there are several differences between the ships of the class depending upon the different mod states amongst the different ships.

My questions are:

1. What are the correct colours for the the vertical and deck surfaces? (preferably in Tamiya and/or Gunze equivalents)
2. For CG-64, what colour should the exhaust stacks be painted? It seems that these vary from all black stacks, grey stacks with black tops or all grey stacks.
3. What colour should the life raft containers be? I have seen white and light grey variations.

I realise that the answers to these questions will depend upon a time period. I don't have a particular time in mind, so lets say pre-update for simplicity's sake. Judging form the kit parts, CG-64 has the VLS, Harpoon launchers, chaff launchers and the older style ship's boats.

No IRB's, bushmaster or IR modified CIWIS are included so I am assuming that these all happened post mod,

For the funnels and liferaft canisters, just pick a photo that represents the period you're modeling the ship, and stick to that photo for your painting - you can't go wrong that way, as you know that she was painted that way for at least one moment in her life. The liferafts are currently the same colour as the rest of the vertical surfaces but appear to be different due to them being fibreglass; I don't how long this has been the case for, though.

I've just purchased a 350th Dragon kit off of Ebay and looking for PE sets and decals.

BigDaddy Mark: what scale is the PE set you got for your kit and if its 350th do you still have the contact info such as website/email?

Does anyone out there do decal sets for specific units or group of units such as the units crests, battle ribbons and E's? In particular, I'm looking for Port Royal's as she was part the battle group when I went to the gulf in 2001.
