Re: Calling all FFG Fans!
The Deal with the Perry class: USN Perry class ships landed the Standard Missile in FY2003. The Standard Missile one medium range (RIM-66E) can't counter missile threats that materialized in the 1990s. The Mk13 launcher has been deactivated in place, the missile launcher's arm has been removed. The Strike down equipment on the superstructure has been removed. The STIR antenna has been removed. The Combined antenna system is in place. To make up for the loss of Harpoon adapters have been provided so that cells in the torpedo magazine can hold Penguin anti-ship missiles and Hellfire missiles for launch from MH-60R (SH-60B upgraded). The Bandstand is the new home of the 25mm Stabilized Bushmaster. The 25mm like the 76mm is gyro-stabilized to compensate for the ships roll while firing. The Phalanx gun has been upgraded from the Block 1 to the Block 1B standard. With longer barrels that are in a brace, an IR and visual camera/scanner on the side for attacking light aircraft, and surface targets. There is also a newer type of radar in the top of the dome that is harder for enemy missiles to detect and evade. If needed RAM missile (RAM, or SeaRAM) can be fit. Getting rid of the standard missile enabled the USN to keep the Perry class in service. Why this was is political and I'll leave that for the Off Topic area.

Re: Calling all FFG Fans!
The outriggers on the forward superstructure were for UNREP, probably just for SM1 or Harpoon transfer (same for forward VERTREP station.
Missile onload and offload to or from the magazine was accomplished with a special carriage or cart that rolled onto a special ramp that would be installed on the deck port side forward of the launcher. The cart with missile had kind of a ball hitch type fitting so that when the cart was properly positioned on the ramp, the Mk13 launcher would engage it and elevate so the missile could be transferred to the launcher rail. Then the cart would be disengaged and the launcher returned to the stow position and the missile downloaded to the missile mag.
Clear as mud?
Late entry - I found this site that explains better than my 25 year old memories (http://www.tpub.com/gunners/191.htm).

Re: Calling all FFG Fans!
Hi
I'm just getting back into warship modelling and have ordered the Academy 1/350 FFG-7 but I was wondering what extras are available for this model?
Also are there any good reference material out there? i.e. Books [I know about the Navsource website.]
Any help you guy's can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Michael

Re: Calling all FFG Fans!
MasterModel of Poland has a small set of brass aerials and a gun barrel that I like. There's also the Veteran Models product line, for example, they have a Mk 36 torpedo launcher (actually a Mk 32 as far as I can find) and Mk 38 gun set that might be useful (note that this is a link to Lucky Model, who currently lists it as "available." This is different than "in stock" and means that they don't have it in stock, but are pretty sure they can order and get more. This detail causes confusion with some buyers). Their SLQ-32 & SRBOC Chaff set might be of utility if you don't like the kit chaff launchers.
There's also more, but I'll stop there for now, have to get back to work!

Re: Calling all FFG Fans!
If you're interested in doing a conversion to the current configuration take note of this new release from Veteran Models. Mk. 38, Mod 2, 25mm Bushmaster. All you need to do now is scratch build the gun platform.

USN or ??

Fifty-five ships were built in the United States: 51 for the United States Navy and four for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). In addition, eight were built in the Republic of China (Taiwan), six in Spain, and two in Australia for their navies. Former U.S. Navy warships of this class have been sold or donated to the navies of Bahrain, Egypt, Poland, Pakistan, and Turkey.

Re: Calling all FFG Fans!
Well, the kit gives you the parts to do both the earlier and later boats, albeit the instructions only show the earlier pieces.
If you want "significant" OHPs I'd say Stark and Samuel Roberts are well known for surviving damage. Nicholas took part in the first surface action against Iraqi forces in the First Gulf War...

Does anyone know if the AFV club 1/350 scale OHP kit is still available? The ROCN option I mean.

Don't ever mix up PLAN with ROCN! You'll have a lot of angry Chinese (PLAN) and Taiwanese (ROCN) people on your hands.

One in stock, so be quick!
