Hey guys, anyone have some pictures of the zone between the 2 blast shields that are connected to the tower that have the Mk-32 radar?

OK: to answer my own question... From a photo of New Jersey in drydock, Garzke n Dulin: Port props turn counter clockwise, stb props clockwise! I would guess this was incorporated along with the four/five blade configuration and the skegs to reduce vibration at high speed.

No, you would find nearly all ships with multiple propellers turn their propellers on each side with blades moving away from the ship in the top half of the propeller circle. This arrangement was found to reduce unfavorable interaction between the ship's wake and the propellers, thus help to improve propeller efficience.

Amazingly I was privileged to spend a lot of time underway on many different ships, but never really had a chance to wander about the bottom of a drydock. Again by thinking about it I guess the handed rotation and resulting release of pressure pulses away from the hull would reduce the vibration, which I can testify that on a Fletcher doing 35 knots is very impressive. As for close maneuvering such as docking with multiple screw ships differential power was used so much that direction of rotation was not so noticeable. Single screw ships had their own techniques and could be impressively handled by an experienced ship handler.

Sometimes I miss the sea, but have been flying planes the last 40 years, a similarly unforgiving environment. One has to love the great skills and international diversity of the people here on this board!

I am on the road right now, but have modeled the section you show on my BB63. I was able to find a shot looking straight down that shows three lockers of some sort against the blast shields inboard. From shots on deck looking forward it appears there is a small covered area aft of the director tower, with an I beam tying the blast shields together. Access through the bulwark is on the port side, aft.

I think the photo I saw was in one of Summeralls books, or perhaps Stillwell's. or maybe Grzke and Dulin or Friedman. Not home for another 10 days so can't help much.

I was aboard Iowa today and took photographs of the area in question. I will try to put these up on a server for reference. To the aft part of this area is a platform for outdoor flightop control. The forward part of the area had three lockers (no longer aboard Iowa). No idea what the lockers were for.

Thanks Bill: I have a lot of photos of Missouri from my several visits, but many areas of the ship are not available to the public. Some of the other ships (which may not be identical) have better access to many areas.

I was in LA the other day and got to see the USS Iowa for the first time. I got a bit camera-happy and took plenty of detail pics too... if anybody is looking for something specific let me know because I probably took a picture of it.

Anyway, I figure I owe the 'net some ship pics after relying on other kind and less landlocked souls to do likewise so here's just a few for your use and enjoyment:

You bet! If the rumors are true, you can bet I'll be first in line for a 1/200 Iowa class... the Iowa would make an incredible subject for a huge superdetail project!

I got 2 1/192 scale kits for the Missouri. Still trying to get the rest of the scale PE parts. I am also looking for a place to get the sea planes that were on the ship. Any chance you know what scale they would have to be to look right on the 1/192 scale ship? Any help would be better than what I have found.

Go for the the Trumpeter 1/200 OS2U Kingfishers. They came with the 1/200 Arizona kit originally but are sold separately now:

The difference between 1/192 and 1/200 is miniscule; I'm sure they would look just fine scalewise and are the right kind of aircraft to be on the Missouri in WWII as well.

It would be great if you can post some photos or reviews of the OS2U's. My modern Missouri woyuld not use them but the scratch Alaska CB1 certainly could.

Nice to have photos of some areas that are not accessable on BB63! Though the ships seem to vary in detail but it is useful informatoin!

I don't get one thing on the New Jersey, I saw that the helipad is raised from the wooden deck, but what about the rest of the deck that have tie downs? Are those decks also raised flush with the helipad or?
