No, the wood decks are original and not raises. The helipad was built on top of the aft section of wood planking, or rather over it (raised a couple inches).

ok, and what about the part on the sides, where I've marked in the picture "Also raised or?" are those steel decks raised like the helipad?

If not, there would have been a slope from the helipad to the steel deck.

VP:

I believe there are some good photos of this area either earlier on this thread, or more likely in LUKY's 1:192 modern Missouri thread under scratch builds. The answer is that the heli deck is raised about 18" in it's flat part and has two ramps that slope down to the main deck level forward. In the center is a narrow main deck level alley with a lip just fwd of the old movie projection booth. There is also a photo in Luky's thread of how I did the heli deck. The dark area of the main deck is the wood covered with anti kid. The extent of this varied with the ship and particular time.

The scale of your model?

Look here for my ship.

nice...so the whole part is raised...
So i must add some height to parts 551 (helipad), and steel decks number 555, 556, 557, 558 is it right?

What you show as the 557 deck is not raised. The wood deck here was covered with anti skid and helicopter tie downs were provided. It looks in this drawing as if this might be a very early configuration before the construction of the raised deck during a later activation of the ship. The early non raised configuration had the smaller offset (to the side) helicopter pad circle.

The deck is raised about 18" on Missouri. Not sure why they raised this except the CPO quarters are directly below and the noise of the flight ops may have engendered some protest!

Looking at the photo you have above, I think that the deck had not as yet been raised. For an early "modern" ship the deck was not raised, for a later time it was as it is currently. I am not sure when the raised decking was added.

Only the helicopter pad itself was raised. It was built up 18" off the steel deck, so it's approximately 12-14" higher than the decking. This was so AFFF fire-fighting plumbing could be routed under the flight deck.

The deck was raised during reactivation, not later on it it's service. There are some pictures floating around out there of the landing pad and plumbing installation. Richard Landgraf specifically talks about the project in his LBNSY book and his chapters on the battleship reactivations.

The diagram is from the Pontos aftermarket set, It's a New Jersey in 1/350, I'm doing the re-fitted version from 1982, somewhere post Lebanese war (cirna 1986+). So in that period how should I represented the helipad and decks?

I've made a photograph so you can show me better. I've raised the helipad 0,5 mm , the next section of the deck should be raised or make a slope?

Sorry if I'm boring, but I want to make this right :wave_1:

Thanks for the lovely photos, guys!

I have a picture request - does anyone have in their archives a picture of the ammunition scuttles (through which the shells were loaded into the hull)? And could someone point out their locations to me on the deck plans (both forward and aft)?

From where you have he deck raised it slopes smoothly down to main deck level as a ramp, reaching deck level at the old movie projection house. This allowed movement of the choppers and their tiedowns away from the operation area. A very gentle slope!

SP:

Will have to look rough my photos and see if I have any photos on the weather deck of the 16" ammunition loading hatches. They were located under the turret overhangs, one port and stbd each behind turret one, and one fwd, port side under the overhang turret three. The turrets were turned for loading and the pulley arm projecting off the turret roof could be used as a hoist.

Sorry to report that on my last visit to Missouri that they were using this area to store junk, the only dim photo shows a circular hatch more or less flush with the wooden deck.

The best that I can do, a circular hatch with padeyes, that appears to have a hinge/spring balance fwd. This is the stbd hatch behind turret one.

Here is a pic that I took from the Iowa in 2006 of the helo deck and ramp. Pick was taking from the aft stack. Chad

Thanks Chad! :thumbs_up_1:

Any good pics of the stern 40mm gun tub after the 1982 reactivation, when they where used as refueling station?

Thanks, Sandro

I might have some decent ones of Missouri, but the ships may have varied here in instalation. Also some equipment was probably removed on deactivation.

Sandro,

Your rendition of the flightop control station came out very nice, pelased the photographs where of help. I am not going to Iowa this week, letting my finger heal after slicing it badly while attempoting to repair one of the bridge windows. I will try to get some photographs of the aft gun tubes my next trip. These are fairly stark. The port side tube was filled with a bladder that contained fuel for the UAVs, it was covered by a white canvas. There is not much in the tube other than valve fittings, The starboard tube was used as a JP5 fueling station for helicopters. If I recall correctly there is a hse real in the tube and valve fittings. These spaces should be easy to model.
