Hi Guys,
Hi madrob,
What scale will you be building? I know if you're planning a 1/96 Knox FF, TheScaleShipyard includes deck plan and profile drawings with their hulls. I think the Knox hull and plans sells for around $170.00.
If not, have you tried The Floating Drydock?
Also, what ship and what year of the particular ship?
Best, Tony

Hi,

Apart from length and beam, can anyone tell me whether there are huge differences between a Knox hull and a Garcia/Brooke hull?

Specifically is the freeboard the same between the two classes? (In other words the hull depth to waterline). And hence the sheer along the hul is basically the same.

I have the chance to acquire a 1/72 Knox hull and I would like to convert it to a Garcia.

Based on internet figures the Knox is 2' 8" beamier than the Garcia which is, approx, 10mm at that scale which can be 'lost' under 'modellers licence' and the Knox is 24' longer, which is 100mm which, depending on the actual hull lines (I have not seen the hull yet) could probably be cut and shut out of amidships and re-fibreglassed.

The stern looks the same and the bow, apart from anchor location, looks broadly similar as well.

Photos tend to suggest that the Garcia's have greater freeboard than the Knox's but that may be an optical illusion given the heavier looking and more substantial nature of the Knox's superstructure. There seems to be lots of crticism of the Knox's seakeeping qualities regarding her hull yet almost none regarding the Garcia/Brooke's which is odd and hence made me wonder if the Garcia's actually had greater freeboard.

I have 72nd scale Garcia/Brooke plans but no Knox plans for comparison.

Any help appreciated.

All the best
Sandy

Hi Guys,
Sandy,
I have a set of Knox plans around my home somewhere. I've posted pics on this thread somewhere with them showing in the background. I don't want to offer something to you and not follow through, but I'll try to find them for your use. I may have scanned them too, but I really don't remember.
I'm working off and on a 1/96 Knox for R/C use, and the plans came with the hull from TheScaleShipyard.
PM me from this website or contact me at larsenal_usa@cox.net and we'll go from there.
Happy Holidays from a rainy Southern California!

Hello, this is my little tribute to this class of ships that served in the Spanish navy.
I'm currently building three of these ships on time, this is the F72 Andaluca, a gift for my brother who served in 90s.

Hope you like it.

Fran.

Hi Guys,
That is a masterpiece !
Just wonderful!
Now, I can see all of the differences between the US version and the way they looked once in use by the Spanish Navy.
WOW, that is one very fine piece of work! It makes me want to get back to work on my stalled 1/96 project. No matter what scale a modeler may prefer, to take a look at Fran's work here is one to behold.
Thanks for sharing your excellent work!
Happy Easter!

Very cool conversion! These photos are a very good reference to do the conversion oneself.

I have finally finished the other two warships of the same class that had commissioned. F75 Extremadura and F74 Asturias.
As you can see the degree of wheathering is different in the three models.
I hope you like.

Working on the Mack is a pain. It has a very complex p.e. set.

gtbrd,

I just bought the Orange Knox also and will start on it as soon as I finish my Orange PHM. Would really appreciate any pix you could post as you go along.

That Mack PE does look like a nightmare, a build over on the Steel Navy site gallery recommended reinforcing with some strip plastic.

I'll be building the Kirk (1087) as she was in the early 80's when I was on her so I will have to remove the hurricane bow and scratch the anchor bolster.
Looking at the kit directions I can see the need to add the following:
- The 3 ECM domes on top of the mack, apparently forgotten by Orange although the mounting holes are there
- Glide slope indicator on top of the hangar
- UHF Satcom antennas, one on the bridge face and the other on the hanger roof (Orange has provided the "tower" for it though)
- ready service/pyro lockers
- wood bridge rail caps

I recently completed BlueJacket Shipcrafters' 1/192 scale Gearing FRAM I kit as the USS Basilone (DD-824) as she appeared during her 1966 World Cruise.
I posted some photos over in the Completed Ship Models section of the Photo section under the title "1/192 scale Gearing FRAM I DD". I can recommend the kit, it builds into a nice display model straight out of the box and the scale lends itself to as mush scratch detailing as you could want to do. BJ makes another version of the kit in the WWII rig.
