Here's one for the books: Another one of Jimbo's masterpieces and it WON'T have a shot at a medal at Telford: Too little plastic on this one!
Beautiful work, Jim! Can wait to see you get on with it!
Cheers,
Guido

Ah, but if he had used this build as a master, then made a resin copy of it, say something you could make a kit out of and then built it from that, then it would.

Could be, he does not want to reinforce the flooring under his metals cabinet.

Fair point all of the above..although the proportions of plastic are not entirety set in stone...

( Gordon Brookes sad disqualification with the SS Sagamore was a consequence in there being absolutely NO plastic on the entire model!! ( purist! :thumbs_up_1: )

Mark Slotas models are not always entirely plastic=--

in any case I was planning to pop it into the sail category :cool_2:

UK IPMS definition of scratch
( Scratch built (S) - A model constructed where the main body parts and / or flying
surfaces are home-made or vac-formed plastic, other than of a commercial nature.
The basic structure should be of plastic although a supporting (wooden) core is
permitted. A scratch built model may be detailed to any level desired by the
modeller.

UK IPMS Competition Telford Class Sail

Class 68 Sailing Ships (any material any scale)

---------------------------------------------

question is ...-- on Agincourt... are the sails auxiliary or is the steam engine auxiliary ?

They are really true motorsailers ... although

by definition a long passage on Agincourt or her most contemporaries was always conducted under sail ( Back in those days ....labour was paid for, time they had and wind was free)...

anyhow-- lets see if I can finish the model to a satisfactory standard... :wave_1:

OK gentlemen....

With the hull at the stage it is at it could still be cast.-- ( and perhaps even marketed via FWL )

It would be merely a starting point ( in the vein of the craftsman kits )

However it would still be a semi-scratchbuild for spars, detailing of deck fixtures, and outside sourced tubing for funnels, PE ratlines, ships boats et al...

IF there is any interest in this... at all I might consider the idea of temporarily stopping the build once the hull is near completed to allow it to be moulded and cast....

Bear in mind this is not a Hi-Tec CAD rendered design but a hand carved hull--so it may not have the precision of a 'professionally' produced kit such as Combrig ....

JB, the funnels in your photo look to be pretty straight forward. I could make a set ready for casting a day or two.

Jim, maybe it's blasfemy or a pure eretic thought...but, if id be in your shoes,i'd make a resin copy of the hull just to build agincourt as coal barge...those cranes screams for being modeled :D:D:D

(by the way, greeeeat work so far, i'm waiting to see this finished)

Watching this thread with interest, Jim. :cool_2:

Is this your first full scratch build? Or are there other efforts in your past? This is really inspiring me to get back to the Solferino, which I hope to do soon. Keep up the good work! You are an inspiration to us all. :wave_1:

Thank you all for your encouragement. :wave_1:

The bow has now been shaped and contains a stainless steel stem piece

I shall re-coat the hull with fresh paint to homogenize and eliminate any further surface defects...

then the decision has to be taken whether of not to try an make a kit ..........

from the main forum
---------------------

So far this looks like we will need at least 18 hulls.

Nevertheless- I hope not to mislead anyone --this is likely to still be a ' Garage ' kit- at best...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-requiring quite some scratch-building of guns, small structures etc etc, adding of windows doors etc... making Pinrails to surround the masts and of course making your own sails.

I will be making some moulds for the sails--so as to be able to shape and stretch wet paper over them

all of this still needs a bit of experimentation.

If that works then perhaps I can get some cast.

The PE I envisage will include the ratlines -size and layout specific to these ships - mast platforms, bridge walkway platform , admiral stern walk platform and railing--and hopefully also the roof.

I thinks PE will be too thick for the racers of the aft sternchaser gun...-- so will see if I can 'let in ' some depiction of this into the deck before it gets cast

I am hoping to get a PE Bowcrest and semblance of scrollwork also

I am in touch with metal turning people for spars, topmasts and barrels .

Will keep you abreast of the project...

what have I done... :doh_1:

OK--time for an update:

The status quo on this ' craftsman type' - "starting-point-only " kit is:

1) The hull has been completed as far as I want to take it and is getting packed to be sent away for casting

I have added the 'over-the-side' heads as well as the outer edged of the hammock through as well as a few small adjustments.

The hull has been sanded fair and smoothed

ie there are no deck structures or funnel bases-
-I prefer this anyway as these are easily fabricated from strip styrene-

==> that way one gets far cleaner paint demarcation twixt deck and structure.
There are no bun carriage races on the deck--as I fear getting these cast dead sharp--leave along painting retrospectively would be very hard.

I would anyhow prefer to add these retrospectively of flattened copper wire anyhow ( as I did on Vladimir Monomakh)

http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/sh ... /index.htm

2) The PE is in hand with the designer--this will include the sternwalk floor, railing and roof, all ratlines-upper an lower -upper and lower tops(platforms) for all masts, all skylight lids, engine room slotted vents, bow crests ( for both Agincourt and Minotaur allowing both ships to be built as well as a few other useful parts

3) Being a full rigged ship on fours masts there are a lot of spars--I intend these to be of turned brass--a supplier is still to be finalized upon.

Here are a couple of images of the completed hull master.

hello Jim
I'm always amazed by the smallness of hulls upon which you are working :thumbs_up_1:
I persist, you are a E.T
congrats
Nicolas
