Calling all Yamato (大和) and Musashi (武蔵) fans

Okay I was wondering since most ships and small things are never painted with any kind of gloss so that's why I kind of seemed odd to me.

There are MANY photographs available out there, of warships with paint schemes clearly having less than dead-flat characteristics. I have dozens of such images in my own collection.

Yeah I guess you guys are right. I was trying to get something at close to a dan k, or a peter van buren kit and was thinking it looked far to glossy. But at the same time I am going for realisim and all ways historical acuaccy ya know :/

Fujimi is releasing a NEW PE set for IJN Yamato (1945) and IJN Musashi (1944) in 1/700 plus an Wooden Deck for both ships.

hi people, i was looking for info about 1:700 Yamato and some kind guy show me this thread, i've read near 80% of this long thread but i am a bit confused,

i'll copy here (sorry if this is crossposting) what i put there:

i've looking lately to build a Yamato 1/700 and was looking for information about existing models and aftermarket parts

i have some doubts about the many options and reached this forum,

i've found the following models looking in many sites (Tamiya official ones, 1999.co.jp, hlj.com, avrmodel.com, etc...):

AFAIK, there are an old and a new tooling from Tamiya, and some new versions, one of them has upgrade parts from Finemold (89795) and could be a good point to buy,

one thing i don't know is if refs 89668,89795 and 31544 are all the same, in reality 31113, why ref 89668 is "special" only because the cover is the same than the recent Japanese movie, and ref 31544? is different from 31113?

Another question, the Fujimi models, it's very difficult to find info (i can't read japanese) about them, do you know anything about them, the tooling? if you were going to buy a Yamato 1/700, a Fujimi? a Tamiya 31113 or a 31554

i've found from here: http://www.hobbyco.net/eComm/docs/31544.htm, it seems 31544 = 31113
but an ebay sheller has confirmed me that 31544 it's Yamato 1945 version and that 31113 it's 1943 version

so more confusing...

excuse my english guys, once i choose one version for building i'll found some upgrade parts, a wooden deck and some PE, also i am thinking about 3D Printing some very small parts to refine them, instead of PE)

so i ordered 3 different tamiya and 2 different fujimi

Well, that should give you the ability to build a number of the variants of the Yamato - as built, Musashi Early Refit with 25mm in sandbag positions on the lower 5" mounts, Yamato as Refitted with 5" Shielded mounts, and even the Full Planned Refit with all twelve in shielded mounts. And even then, you'll have one more kit to do with as you please.

I've read through about 50 pages of this thread and I've been blown away but the amount of knowledge and information here. 1 question I have is that I want to build a super detailed Yamato to look fantastic in my living room in a cabinet. It doesn't need to be 100% accurate as that sounds almost impossible, but I want lots of detail and for it to be absolutely imposing. Would you recommend the 1/200 Nichimo kit or the 1/350 tamiya kit?

Tamiya by far - the Nichimo is much older and less accurate. If within your price range, get the new-tooled Tamiya rather than the old or the old-with-slight-upgrades.

It depends on what you want and mean by it being "imposing". When I relate imposing to model ships, then I think large size. Having a built 1/200 Yamato (nichimo) and a 1/350 Yamato (old tool tamiya) in my collection, there is no doubt in my mind when I walk into my display room, which of the two is more imposing- the 1/200 Yamato is just friggin huge.

That being said, it's size is pretty much the only positive thing I have to say about the nichimo yamato. If you are not in a hurry, I would not be surprised to see a 1/200 yamato from trumpeter/ merit in the not too distant future.

I have a question regarding the main guns of the yamato.
I've seen a lot of models that show this detail different - circular parts/rings on the top of the guns are in the original color of steel, like models like 1:10 in Kure. Other display this part as rather yellowish, I suppose brass. Like this:


I suppose it would be more accurate to leave that part of the original color of steel, but the photos of the cannon of Mutsu confused me - it has a brass breech. Perhaps brass anti-corrosion layer?

Yet another question. Was the Yamato's crain held in place by it's weight or was it affixed to the ship by some other means? Like most of the other stuff on the ship I would imagine it was just by weight, but I'm not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

ok guys after 8 long months I final am nearing the finish line for my 1945 IJN Yamato! there are a few mistakes on it and I am currently working on and tryinh to fix one is the rear AA mounts. I am replacing them with I believe oceanspirt AA mounts. please give me your thoughts on it and let me know what you think and be honesty. And if there is any thing you think will help enhance the ship please pleas let me know!! thank you much! Also thank you much to Dan K , Atma, bucketfoot-al and Timmy C for all your help!
