AA Guns, which were normally to be stowed into their WT bins, were grey.
Looking at this picture, at least one bollard seems to of different colour than the stripes. The one I have marked is on the white stripe area, but definetly it's not white.

Now I'm working on the aft and I'm wondering why the aeroplane crane's post is different in some pictures. Is it possible, that the upper part of the post is detachable or is there a joint and it can be lowered to horizontal position?

Sometimes it is tall as in Trumpeters kit, (the first pic) but in other pictures it's much shorter.

Hello

a part of the drum cylinder of the crane was extensible.

in photo the bollard is black , the picture was taken in Trieste during the 'final preparation before delivery.
But it could not have been colored, because the bollard had a moving part to slide the cables

Some progress on my build, two sailors went aboard Roma today. It's been puzzling me how to paint the little guys: in pictures I see them almost always wearing dark pants and white jacket, but all sources say their uniforms are either white or blue.

Yes, white or blue depending on the season. White shirts on blue trousers may appear in, say, a hot spring day when the winter dress was still on but the men pulled off their blue jackets.
Unless you want it so for a chromatic reason, you should repaint the compass on the conning tower gray, as brass objects had to be covered by paint in wartime.

Thanks for the tip, I'm afraid the colour of the compass is not going to be the only error in my model!

Now looking at this picture, I think it's pretty formal and they are wearing this mixed outfit of white and blue.

.

See this build, an amazing bit of seascape and a fascinating comparison with the beautiful "museum" build above ;

Does anyone have a color image of what the Coat of Arms symbol on the bow of Roma is supposed to look like?

Thanks mpgl62.

I had seen other crests with the +SPQR on them but I couldn't find anything showing what was in that area between the crown above and the +SPQR below.

Help with some Roma specifics, please

Post by grlichti »

Hi everyone! I have been a "lurker" on this site for some time, poring over various threads. Finally wanted to join and get some assistance. I am enthralled with building the 1/350 Roma. After much research on this thread, this site in general and other sites, I have a few statements/questions for some of you to answer please.

1) In addition to the the Trumpeter ship itself, I have ordered , the Flyhawk super detail set, and the Artwox deck kit. Are there any other aftermarket items ("Screws", barrels, etc.) needed that these do not address? If so, could someone elaborate a bit on brands and sources?

The following are the primary colors I have chosen, but some input here would be welcome. (Especially, since one major handicap I have is no airbrush. Spray cans are best I can do, unless it is just hopeless to do so, so any thoughts on that are welcome as well): Humbrol 27 'Sea Grey' for horizontal/deck surfaces, Humbrol 67 'Tank Grey" for dark superstructure Camo, Humbrol 127 'Ghost Grey' for superstructure vertical surfaces, Humbrol 140 'Gull Grey' for dark hull camo and Humbrol 149 'Foliage Green' for anti corrosion. Any additional paint and color comments provided (such as opinions on Life Color RM kit or White Ensign, etc) would be most welcome.

And, the best whites and reds for aerial ID stripes? I am leaning towards enamels, because that is what I used to use, but thoughts on acrylic are also appreciated.

Thank you so much and I am certain to have more questions but this will do for now!

I would use humbrol 147 for the light grey!

You mean Flyhawk not Fire Hawk? FlyHawk kit is pretty complete and correct. The only additions I could think of are some handwheels in different sizes. You could add them on deck and for the crane cabling as gable guides. Some errors I have found:
- the upper rangefinder (on top of the main tower) rear platform is too wide and ladders should be outside the platform. Easy to modify
- the rails for the second aircraft (on deck forward of the catapult) are too narrow at least for the Pontosmodels wooden deck
- the rangefinders on both sides of the main tower, rear platform has handrails (should be without) and is too wide, easy to modify. There are hatches on top of the rangefinders - they shouldn't be there, just leave them out.
- some mistakes on ladders of main turrets, just study the pictures to place them correctly
- handrail on main tower too short on the platform where 0-shaped antenna sits. A little bit trickier to correct since it is attached to platform metal surface, which is also too short. The handrail should go around the tower identically on both sides.
- both twin aa-guns are missing details of aiming equipment, challenging to scratchbuild.
- stairs leading to aa-platform in front of the second main turret, they should be ladders not stairs
- there's surplus ladder on the kit, use it to places not indicated in the instructions.
- probably there's lot more, but this is what I have found out.

For the aerial stripes I used matt acrylic paint and I'm quite happy with the results.

Thanks, this to replace the Ghost Grey? Would you elaborate a bit when you get a chance?

Yes, Flyhawk, sorry, post edited. Thanks for those tips, big help.

Does anyone have ideas on specific color codes for Red and white (as I know they are not Ferrari red for example!)?

BRICK RED and dull white. Lifecolor has the exact shades in its RM specific line.
