1:700 Combrig SMS Derfflinger 1918

This is my 1:700 Combrig SMS Derfflinger, shown at the time of her internment in Scapa Flow.
The model is now ready to be painted. Various alterations and refinements have been made to it, most notably scratchbuilding the tripod foremast with fighting top as the model represents an earlier fit with pole foremast. As pictures and plans of SMS Derfflinger are few and far between, somewhat unusually my main main reference is Mr. Thomas Kl�nemann's excellent 1:250 card model of this famous Grosser Kreuzer. I made a fair progress so far regarding the limited time I have due to other (mainly professional) commitments.
I will try to update this thread as the build advances.

I like this a lot. I have a half build Derfflinger in the stash. The lack of references did for me. Especially regarding the masts and the deck guns.
THE new deck guns you have made.I always knew Id have to grind those out and scratch the guns themselves. Any tips on constructing them. Ill have to do the same down the line and I like your work there.

Allan, on the construction of AA guns: After carefully hollowing out the shields with a motor tool (I left the bottom part, unvisible after construction thicker to prevent the paper-thin shield from collapsing upon the slightest pressure exerted - like grabbing it with my fingers), I scratchbuilt the guns themselves assembled from basic shapes out of stretched sprue, metal rod, etc., according to the measurement previously taken from the kit's guns.
Jim, I am glad you like my Iron Dog. I assume you have similar problems as I - too much work, too little time for modelling. My progress can be called rapid relative to these circumstances not the least because I have now finished painting the wooden decks!

Dear friends,
here's an update. Most of the painting is complete, including the small parts not shown here. There's some subtle additional weathering to do, touching up the paintjob at places, enhancing contrast and then assembly can commence.

Is the differentiation of the thickness of the circles of lower and upper turrets deliberate?

Thanks for the praising words.
There's an overhead picture of SMS Derfflinger which shows the cirlcles atop turrets B and C to be noticably thicker than the ones on turrets A and D.
Hence the difference on my model.
Hope you'll be able to return to modelmaking soon.

yes, indeed a real fine double of my 1:250-Derfflinger, but m u c h smaller.... Really admirable, how good You work with this little kit and its parts.

Hi all,
here's an update. I began attaching the railings and practically all small fittings have been glued to the main deck. In the last few pictures the canvas covered railings (fashioned out of white glue) of the superstructure can be viewed prior to painting.

xxxcrush your praise is all the more precious to me after seeing your work. Now that is something extraordinary I don't think I can match!
I have proceeded with the build. The things still missing are:
boats, masts, jack and ensign staff, boarding ladders, three searchlights, rigging, crew and some minor details.
There's not all that much left.
