I have had the privilage at various exhibitions over the years of seeing a number of models by John Prothero-Thomas . No photo can do real justice to these master pieces of model art . I come away awe struck after viewing his models. Jim I do hope he can show more of his magnificent builds now and into the future .

As I perused these BEAUTIFUL renditions of the mariners world,I had a thought.This gentleman must have a time machine stashed somewhere! These builds are so detailed and artfully done it,s like he was there when each ship existed!!This is a level I have often aspired to,but, my clients keep me in check.I do doff my hat to mr. JOHN PROTHERO-THOMAS! He is the reason I build models.Gentlemen like him are rare.He does give you something to think about with all those aftermarket parts and p.e.on your bench ,and he used none of that stuff!!!MR.THOMAS,If you visit SHIPMODELFORUM I am glad to make your acquaintance commodore4

Hi all!

I receives some images of another recent model that JPT has completed!

Its of course his usual superb work-- but especially atmospheric!

In JPT's own words...

I have been converting a hull-only galleon to full sail on the Ocean , which maybe of interest:

No 1 image is from Bjorn Lanstoms 1961 "The Ship" which inspired me at the time,and 45 years later served as the source all those painted shields created via laser copier.

The sails were hand painted 2x finish size the reduced down and computer printed onto tissue and applied to preformed tissue sails.

No 2 image is the mastless model finished about 5 years back and the beginnings of the re-masting,having summoned sufficient courage to try painting those sails,

The models rang a bell ... I went into my files and found the July 1999 issue of ModelBoats that I specifically bought because of the article on his models

The article also described the ways he made his seas - covering the base with woodchip wallpaper and then painting it.

The picture I liked most in the ModelBoats article was from a Dubai(?) dhow in its leaden sea - just as I remember the Gulf from a couple of visits to Oman, very evocative.

Kinda makes me want to throw my ships away and go back to playing Xbox as my hobby...

That has gotta be the pinnacle of model boat building... plenty of those photos would pass as the real thing in your average "Tall Ships" book! Amazing!

Jim, if you see Mr Prothero-Thomas, don't forget to tell him some crazy guy in the Western U.S. has begun worshiping him as a pagan god.

John is a member of the Society of Model Shipwrights. I'm a member also. We have our bi-enniel exhibition this Saturday - 18th August - at Petts Wood in Kent. John often shows some of his models. I'll have my model (nearly finished) of USS Missouri - BB63 there. I'm also one of the judges. Please come along if you are in the area. It's at the hall in the square by Petts Wood railway station.
