Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Hi there,
Just registered, first reply here. I'm not new to ship modelling but I have been away from the hobby for over ten years. I just bought Trumpeter's 1/700 Warspite in 1915 livery.
I am looking for some reference books/websites/articles containing painting directions and detailing info. What should I get and from what source?

For details, Anatomy of the Ship Warspite is a good place to start. Also RA Burt has a book on British Battleships of the First World War.Johan72 wrote:Hi there,

Paint would be a light neutral gray, if I recall correctly.

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Hello gentlemen,
This is my first post on this forum.
I have been a modeller for a decade now and recently got interrested in ships.
I am currently working on the Trumpeter QE 1943 1/350 and i have a question...
The Trumpeter model shows the deck around the dual 4,5 inch turrets in teak wood, but i have seen several build models where this area is in painted metal...
I have read this entire tread and looked for good photos, but found no closure as to what is correct for the QE in 1943 colors.
Are there people here who know what would be correct??
Many thanks in advance
Tim

Steel, see image: the wooden decks end in front of the turrets at a small breakwater. Same for the aft turrets.

Please,
There is at same place a comparation between Trumpeter X Academy 1/350 Warspite kits. I'd like to know the goods and bad points from each kit considering a possible kitbash among them.
Best Regards,
Ricardo

The Warspite is on my short list. Want to do either a 1/600 or 1/700. From the looks of it though I think the only full hull kit is the 1/700 trumpeter. Downside is that it's 1916 outfit. Would rather have her in the WWWII outfit but the only smaller kit is the White Ensign kit, Which I can't seem to find. And I think it's Waterline only.

The 1942 Warspite will be released in 1/700 in September, so just wait.

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Hi all!
I asked in here some time ago for backdating the 1/700 Trumpeter QE kit, and finally decided to build it as the kit config, i.e. 1918. There comes an uncertainty on the colour of the horizontal surface (except the wooden deck). Should it be dark grey, or light grey as hull colour, or linoleum deck? or they should all be applied in different locations? Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Kind of. It's only been publicized on Pit-Road's blog, but they cooperate with Trumpeter on many of their kits, so it'll likely by sold by Trumpeter outside of Japan.

Here's my 2400 QE & Rs - still working on the paint - the tan & light grey I traided for - the dark grey & unpainted are mine.

The point under discussion was what are the wooden poles in the photograph?TCC wrote:EJFoeth wrote:You mean the ones bottom row center? Slightly different in appearance.
Aye, that's them. While it's possible that they are a more basic design than yours, I had my own doubts as the handles are too long and there being so many.
I can't think of anything else that could be on a bridge? It can't be the janitors prize collection of mops and brooms!
Are they anything to do with the awning?
I wonder if they are hand-held flags? Such as for signalling when to drop the anchor, etc, along with morse or semaphore flags for signalling to ships in company? The poles are hand-held flags.
Edit: reading up on Morse flags: the flags came in 2 sizes, 2 and 3 ft square and the staffs for them were 3ft 6in and 5ft 6in long respectively. I'd say that was them.

Not sure if this is relevant, been covered, or even important but I believe that Airfix has discontinued their 1/600 Warspite. Although it's still in stock at a few online retailers. If you've been on the fence about picking up that particular model you may want to go ahead and scoop one up. I've seen prices between $11-$13US.

HMS WARSPITE CONFIGURATION
Hi, Im new in this forum, hope you guys can help me with some information regarding Warspite drawings.
Ive seen in the web a lot of drawings, pictures and models of Warspite during WWII, but I still can't realize if there is a small piece of steel after the second 6in gun on both sides. To make it more clear, please look at the following drawing of Warspite that doesnt include that "piece" but I marked the position where ot should be in red.
Appreciate of you can help me to realize if that piece should be considered on Warspite 1942 and 1943, or not, and if I have to consider it in the model, please et me know what the porpouse of that small part.
Sorry if my english is not so good, I tried to make it clear as I could!!
Thanks!!
Fernando

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
The ship had small sounding machine or "leadsman's" platforms at those positions, port and starboard on the upperdeck. They were apparently still present during WW2 and are shown in the Anatomy of the Ship by Ross Watton. Some drawings suggest that these extensions may have been hinged for folding, but I have no post-reconstruction photographs available to prove this. But they were there, just where your marked area indicates, and by WW2 they may have been fixed (not fold-away).
Hope this helps,
Dan

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Anyone got WEM Barham instructions?
I'm starting the Trumpy kit with some leftover PEs from WEM Warspite, which is a largely intact sheet for Barham/Malaya and would like a clearer idea of which goes where particularly the starfishes. thx.

Heres a picture of my build with wood deck from Artwox.

Had to cut out piece for 5" guns.

Note the shields on pom poms, after USA refit.

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Now that Barham and soon to be released Warspite are becoming available, would the Warspite kit be a good starting point to convert to a Valiant? Also would the Barham be a good donor for the Malaya?? I have the 1/700 Morskie available for the Malaya.
