Hehe. Your work on this Arizona almost makes me feel bad for blowing so many of these up with firecrackers. Almost.
Nicely done with an old kit!

There have been times with this kit were i've wanted to live a date in infamy over frustration with it. :p There are plenty of little flaws up close. But from a few feet away it doesn't look so bad. This being an old revision isn't as bad as the mold "slip" or whatever caused the uneven halves on so many of the parts. I've got ~$21 into the kit itself but could have gotten it for cheaper (~$16) but after what i've spent in paints and supplies that cost is pretty trivial.

Getting close. I've got pretty much everything attached and painted. Need to mount less than 5 pieces, A few rails on the side of the deck and the flagpole, etc. I attempted to do a little rust and am pretty pleased with the effect. I used Tamiya's weathering master kit and it was insanely easy to use. So I just need to put some finishing touches, decals, rigging, etc on and she'll be pretty much done. Once i'm actually done i'll try to take some higher res pics.
Here's some crappy iPhone shots in the meantime!

So.... I've noticed that I'm missing ONE piece. I've searched high and low. One of the rear boat cranes. She needs two... Not sure what i should do.. Although. cheapest solution would probably to use the 40% off coupon at the local hobby store and just buy a whole new kit for $13 and just rob the part out of it and donate the rest to my brother or something. See if i can get him into modeling.
Here is a pic. Think i'll change the orientation of it to be over the actual boats.

Glad to see that somebody actually had something spare that i needed, especially out of such a basic kit. Nice little stroke of luckBrocky wrote:Shane,

Still waiting on some really really fine line to arrive so I can attempt some rigging and finish this thing up.
In the meantime i've been working on a little Mini Hobby 1/72 Dassault Super Etendard that i've had in my closet FOREVER.

Well done Hallis!
This show that it is absolutely to "rework" an old model and make it look decent! I already have two such model in "my pages" in this forum: Heavy Cruisers Ltzow and Admiral Scheer. Both originally built by in 1978(!)
And by the way: I also had a break for around 20 years.
And by the way (2): I also built your Arizona kit - back in the late sixties... Ended up as a target for my airgun, I believe...
Also fun to note how much modelling technology has changed over the years..
To show my point I enclose an as built-picture 1980 and a five years ago-picture of my Torpedoboot T28 1:400 Heller

Indeed. The technology has come a long way in just the last few decades. Not to mention since the 1950's when the Revell molds for Arizona were made.

Should arrive just in time for me to finish everything up. Only lack that crane and the fine line to arrive for the rigging.
While i've been waiting...
Dassault Super Etendard Wings!!!! I did some research on ye old internets and found that the actual color used by the Argentina Navy is an exact match for Model Master "Gunship Grey". I picked up a rattle can of that at the local hobby store and it looks like a perfect match. Only thing is now to try to figure out if i'm going to do the plane in a gloss or flat finish. My original instinct was to go flat but on the videos i've seen they're actually a pretty shiny gloss so I think that's the way I might go. But as the two wings here are the only parts that i've actually gotten done i've got a long way to go. lol even if it is just a 1/72 scale. But I am really happy at the paint match. After they've had another day or so to dry i'll finish up the landing gear compartments.
Excellent Thanks Mark!Brocky wrote: Shane,

Mark,
The crane arrived today. Have it painted and installed already. Now all I have to do is wait for that line to get here so I can do some rigging.
Here's a shot of the boat deck.

You got that right! I have had the same spools (black and white) for 6 or 7 years, and you cant even tell that I have used any of it. A spool lasts a lifetime for sure.Hallis wrote:Grrr i wish my Caenis Thread would arrive. Good thing though is i'll probably only have to ever order that one spool.

Re: 1/426 Revell USS Arizona. First build in 20 years
IT came in the mail today so it looks like i'll finally, hopefully, be able to finish the Arizona this weekend. But man this stuff is tiny. I'm wondering if it's not possibly too small for 1/426.sgtryan13 wrote:You got that right! depending on the type of lines I am trying to replicate, sometimes I double it up in 1/350.

Here's my use of Caenis on a 350th model - judge for yourself whether it's too thin or just thin enough: http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery ... /index.htm

Looks pretty good, Timmy. But that ship, even being 1/350, looks to be smaller than the Arizona. But. I'll go with this thread, worst case scenario, I hate it, and pull it off and use something else. Probably one of the easier things to redo on this model. And I do have four 1/700's that this will work perfect for.Timmy C wrote:Here's my use of Caenis on a 350th model - judge for yourself whether it's too thin or just thin enough: http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery ... /index.htm
Also, work on the Super Etendard continues.

This might be a better representation, then - http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery ... /index.htm
Same rigging material, but a bit larger ship.
