Calling all Russian submarine fans

Wow great pic of the scoops!! hopfuly if hobbyboss does a 1/350 Typhoon they will include the water intake scoops.. If not are there any ship kits out there that have liked scoops that on could salvage from? Also what is this 1/350 Golf Class ship cominig out ? any links? And any word on a release date for the Hobbyboss Akula 1/350?

Too bad it's not an Akula I. Not sure why manufacturers insist on producing the later Akula's.

stupid question .. Can one use the sail from the Bronco Akula on the Hobbyboss hull and take a tail tow pod from a Hobbyboss Victor III and make it into a Akula I - II ?

There is hope that HB may have the Akula not too far off the mark: forget the boxart, move on to the actual model and, surprise-surprise, it is not Gepard!

Yep, same feeling here: the drawings do look like a fat whale, but if you look at the actual hull pieces they seem more "streamlined".

Hence my verdict of "there is hope"...

Russianns don�t cease to surprise me. When browsing through the pictures at "Soviet & Russian Submarines" page at Facebook, I�ve found this one:

New guy here, just registered. Great topic, very helpful for my current modeling interests!

Though just now building a few sub models,have a lot of experience with resin automobile and aircraft kits and thought I might pass on some tips to those having troubles making paint stick to resin. First off, not all resins are the same and not all release agents are the same as well. What has worked best for me in most instances is a product called Bleche-White, sold as a tire cleaner in some auto parts stores. Have no idea if it is available outside of the USoA. For priming, I use only automotive grade paint. I used to use DuPont primer but it is no longer available in California, so I have turned to spray can products available at auto parts stores. I use Duplicolor sandable primer (which comes in gray, white, black, red-brown, and red), or VHT Prime-Coat (black, light gray, dark gray, red oxide).

Any one get or further reviewed the new Hobby boss 1/350 Oscar call and Akula classes yet? I cant remember if there out yet but to me the oscar is on the to get list!

I have the Akula.

I was planning to post some pics but I am renovating a room in my house and that is making my hands full.

I will attempt a mini review here. (Maybe) more to follow (maybe) soon.

The good:
It is NOT the Gepard! And thank goodness for that! So forget the boxart etc.
Overall shape looks good (see below though!)
Sail layout, masts, and how it fares into the hull OK!
Nice raised lip of the sonobuoy housing aft of the sail
Nice towed array pod
Trim tabs on all horizontal and vertical tail surfaces

The bad:
SOKS (they got the forward of the sail part ok, but no SOKS on top of the sail - strange because on the Victor they did a pretty good job, competely bogus is the part under the water)
Shape of at least two torpedo tube hatches...very elongated and does not match any picture...
Cruciform vortex attenuator on the screw very exaggerated (they stubbornly make it all in plastic when they could much more simply and effectively use plastic for the hub and PE for the cross...)
Limber holes with the shape of the early boats.

The ugly:
As it was already guessed by the first images available directly from HB, the shape of the stern is VERY odd. I will try to explain: instead of evolving from a cone into more of a funnel approximately at the point of the rudders, the cone continues to the end, making it very "fat" at the end whereas on the real boat it is a very slender cylinder. It also looks short.

Verdict:
Better than Bronco's Gepard.
Far from perfect.
Will look like an Akula once built.
Very good if a waterline model is made (this way you can do away with the stern issue entirely)
My score: 75%
