Calling all Yamato (大和) and Musashi (武蔵) fans

What configuration is the current Yamato Hiroba 1:10 in? It doesn't seem to be in the final configuration described in any of the publications.

My guess is that these models were complete before the wreck was discovered to verify any differences between them and never corrected.

On the 1:10 Model, the main difference is the tower over the stern crane is in place and the name in Hiragana on the back is off.

Can someone explain this?

For those of you that are building the Nichimo Yamato, I got L'Arsenal's Turrets for this model and then had a friend CnC the turrets to accept Nichimo's turret base... I'm very happy with the results
The rear of the base will need to be trimmed...now, I'm waiting for L'Arsenal to release the 15cm turrets.

I'm a long-time Yamato fan, having done both 1/350 & 1/250 Yamato some ten years ago. Just being back modeling (kid does grow up, eventually).

Having 1/200 Nichimo & GMM PE set on shelf gathering dust for a while, I'd like to start the journey again. However, it seems the main gun turrets of Nichimo's are not quite up to what I consider good enough. Trying L'Arsenal website and they're all sold out. Looking in eBay and couldn't find anything there either.

Given all the knowledges of Yamato's fan here, is there anyone who could suggest me where could I find the upgraded main turrets? Don't want to risk starting the project without all the ingredients ;)

Hope you guys could help me out. I'm just not good enough scratch building :(

Be patient regarding 1/200 Yamato turret upgrades. I'm sure L'Arsenel will have these in stock before you are done building that monster. There is also an ebay seller who sells the turrets. Just keep a look out.

Does anyone know how many Ammo Boxes (Tall and Short) are on the deck during a typical Yamato cruise?

What's the number of Tall Ammo Boxes that are typically stored inside each open gun tub?

How many are bolted onto the deck and where?

Has anyone used the FlyHawk IJN Ammo Boxes (PE) and are they good?

[I answered this privately, but thought I'd post it here as well]

I didn't focus on the ammo boxes on the 1:10 model, so I don't have a closeup of them, but I can see that they're scattered about on the decks behind the AA tubs and enclosed mounts, up against the bulkheads. I don't see two sizes. The AA gun tubs are open in the backs, presumably for ready access to the boxes, and there are no boxes visible inside the tubs.

For that big wooden square at the stern of the ships - it serves as an emergency rudder. It gets lowered in the water, a bunch of rigging attached to it, and then gets manually steered with the help of capstans and such.

Take a look at this photo. Doesn't make sense. Is this something for Yamato?

What doesn't make sense? The metal straps are to be glued on top of the wooden "board". It'll become obvious once you compare it with photos/existing models containing the rudder.

The emergency rudder was not limited to just the Yamatos.

After further investigation on this thread I found other comments about this. I am new to ship models, so I will be asking many questions. I appreciate all the guys here helping us newbie ship guys out when we have questions.

Just so you know, I am working on a 1:350 IJN Yamato project for one of my future builds. I have the Tamiya new tool kit and a lot of the PE and Resin needed to nicely detail my kit. I am still in the buying phase of some extra PE that my other detail kits don't cover.

If you can suggest anything that the major detail kits didn't cover, please let me know.

This is what I have. You might think it's over kill, but I got most of this at a discounted price and thought I would cover my butt while this stiff is still available. Most likely I will build another in the same scale. I will have plenty of time to build this during retirement, but thats a way off yet.

The Emergency Kit is a toss up now because no photography is known showing Yamato carrying an emergency rudder on her stern. I have seen a couple models online with the rudder hanging over the stern, but don't know if that is accurate. Now since I know from you what the Emergency Kit is for, I will have to look through the information I have and see if I can find something showing it. Does anyone have the correct hull colors? Tamiya suggests TS-33 dull red and XF-12 JN Grey for their 350th premium kit. The dull red is to red and the grey is very light which does not compare with some of the completed kits out there.

I painted my hull and guns with Tamiya IJN Grey Kure Arsenal spray paint (TS-66) which is xf-75 in the bottle. It seems a little dark. I doubt I'll change it. But there is a line in a book that states that Yamato looked silver on her final mission. So if you're doing a 1945 version might want to go with a lighter grey. And maybe go darker with earlier versions.

I think it's funny they paint the hull a light grey and and then paint the deck with black stain. Would,'t it be nice to have a color picture of Yamato!

Well, if you consider that, seen from the air, the surface of the sea looks sort of black, painting the deck black is a good camouflage measure since the deck is what you see from above. It may not exactly be effective at hiding a 70,000 ton ship, but the idea makes sense at least....same reason USN planes were painted dark blue on top, and light color on the bottom ...

I always buy my anchor chain at the dollar store. You'll find what you need in the cheap jewelry section. I haven't paid over 3 dollars for any of my anchor chains. Just have to paint it, but hey save where you can. Sometimes you can find a necklace that is long enough to do multiple ships.
