Wood decks and spraypaint, 2 questions!

Post by spitfire4sergi »

Hi everyone!

To keep it short and sweet, I'm building my first 1/700 kit (HMS Rodney) soon. I've got two questions:

1) It's my first time with a wood deck kit, and I have NO idea what to expect. Any tips on cutting/placement?

2) I don't have an airbrush kit, and I'll be doing the painting (hull/superstructure) with Tamaya spray paint. Any tips on spray painting? I'm affraid of holding the can too close, too far, too many coats, do I wash the hull/brass kit with soap first, etc.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it!

Hi Spitfire,
First welcome to the forum, and you'll get lots of help here.

Questions- the wood deck is not hard to do at all, I prefer to hand paint my "wood decks" but the key is to prime everything first, before painting. As far as spray painting the ship, the distance I use is 8 to 12 inches from the part that I'm painting, if it is the hull is always stay about 12 inches away using a slow steady two direction spray, spray in the same direction bow to stern first, then stern to bow on the second pass, then let it dry and check the coverage, repeat as necessary but be sure to monitor the coverage you don't want it to thick, or runs at have to be sanded back down.

If you choose to spray the wood deck, then prepare for a lot of masking and clean up of the details. I use a teak wood color and then weather it as needed, if your doing a camo deck then the weathering is in accordance the color patterns of the deck.

Hope this helps, Good luck sir
