...then again there were those two Japanese aircraft carrier subs that were on their way to bomb the Panama Canal when the war ended, but since they saw no action and surrendered, that probably wouldn't count ...

I didn't know that either,until someone posted on the main forum about a battleship shell was found in Japan a few days ago.

On another note, They way I understood it ,Yamato was stopped at the time of capsizing. I think the wreckage collaborates this.Given that the wreck is in a circular pattern and all parts of the wreck are in close proximity to each other,To me if she was still underway at that time the wreckage would most likely be in a rectangular pattern.

One other problem I came across during my research, It was stated that her rudder was jammed by a torpedoe and could only make turns to the right( or left,I forget ). If you look at the rudder(main) it's perfectly straight, and the smaller secondary rudder is missing.

Maybe only the screws on one side of the ship were working and this turning in a circle was a result?

That would explain it, but I went back to reread it, and the turn was allegedly to starboard. Then read that the boilers on that side of the ship had been flooded earlier to correct the list. So the screw on that side would've been unoperational. Like I said before the more you look at it the more questions you have.

To add to this...I think I heard that one of the props fell off the ship from a torp hit. Not sure if this is true or if it is what side it was on.

It was the outer most starboard screw, But according to the wreck dio at Kure that screw is pointing almost straight up and down just beside the starboard boat launch. So that's how I have it depicted my my wreck build. It's my understanding that the Tamiya crew that built the wreck went completely off the illustrations form Mr.Yukio Mizuno, the man that last surveyed the ship.

Late in the battle Yamato took a lone torpedo to the stern (see the diagram I posted a page back). That jammed the rudder and left her listing and circling helplessly as the Yorktown flight arrived. At that point only 1 of her screws was still turning according to the Japanese CGI movie of the mission, which is a dead-on blow-by-blow reconstruction of the entire battle (linked on my website - if you haven't seen it, its fascinating). Once the Yorktown flights' torpedoes hit, she capsized within 10 minutes. Prior to that the list increased gradually, but once her bottom was torn out according to Yoshida "the inclinometer takes a marked leap"...

BTW if you look at some of the distant photos of her blowing up you can make out a circular wake leading up to the ship's last position ...

Bucketfoot; I think the link for the CGI final battle may be broken. Yes it does take you to youtube, but there isn't anything about the final battle except maybe the build up to it.

In the video that I watched and posted on my "multiple yamato build" thread They go through the wreck ,the end game,and have a small CGI of her capsizing, where they illustrate 3 explosions.Sadly it too is in Japanese, So I can't understand what they are saying, but the video is well worth watching.

I read somewhere that the screws were only turing on one side to compensate for listing. Will have to look around for it tonight. If I remember right it was from flooding compartments.

I've been following this post for sometime now researching long and hard for accurate info on my Yamato build. Hopefully someone can answer this question;
The late revision / upgrade that occurred for the anti-aircraft guns remains unclear to me as whether the gun tubs were round or the hexagon / box like shape tubs that were on the stern and main gun turrets ? Is there definitive information that resolves this question or is it still argumentative as to which design they were ? Thanks guys....

Yes, I've converted the older tamiya 1/350 Musashi kit to dec 1941 version of Yamato. What do you want to know about it?

Screw is turning only on one side because the boiler and engine rooms on the other side have been intentionally flooded to compensate for the ship's list. One of the failings of Yamato's damage control crew was the fact that they failed to pump out some of the boiler rooms and engine rooms once further damage have offset the listing moment created by earlier damage.

Yes, I've converted the older tamiya 1/350 Musashi kit to dec 1941 version of Yamato. What do you want to know about it?

Many changes to the superstructure aside from removing and repositioning DP and light AA and adding the beam turrets?

i was wondering if any one could help me with the cutters (lifeboats) on the Yamato and Musashi i am busy building. in the tamiya instructions it says that during operation ten go the cutters where stored in Yamato's hull so would it be correct if i put the cutters in the hanger at the stern and hanging from the overhangs and either side at the stern and on Musashi i place them on the sides of the hull?
