Calling all IJN Tone (利根) & Chikuma (筑摩) fans

I was just wondering is Fujimi 1/700 Chikuma,kit# FUJ41019 1944 Leyte a new mold kit? And how accurate is this kit?

Do you mean 410197? If so is a new mold, and is the best 1/700 IJN Chikuma(same for the new mold IJN Tone) you will find in the market. Accurate and casting wise.

I can not find that number 410197 listed on HLJ website! Only the above number and full hull version #40106!

Thanks for the Pic's Atma. That set does look nice. It looks very close to the MK1 set. It is still missing some stuff that the Lionroar set has though.

On 29 June 1945, Tone was painted in a camouflage scheme, as evidenced by several photos taken of her wreck post-war. Anyone have a schematic as to how the whole scheme looked?

A quick question: does anyone know the history of the differing aircraft types carried by Tone and Chikuma? In particular at which date F1M's were first carried?

Dear Friends,
Do you know what surface exactly was on upper airdeck in Tone class?
Was it linoleum with brass or steel with antiskid plates? Looking at photos posted by Dan I could come to the conclusion it was linoleum. Arrangements of rails indicates in my understanding that photographer took a picture being on starboard, close to catapult, with view on rear part of the ship.

But in Gakken publication I can see grey surface over whole upper air deck...
Could it be that it was asphalt or something similar?

Was that oil and water stains on the wreck, or paint?

No, it was definitely camo paint. Typical for the floating battery configuration.

Depends on the time frame. Dave's and Elf's would have been carried pre 42. The Pete's came in 42 and would have replaced the Daves. elf's were gone around the same time to Jake's.

Hi all, few questions regarding Chikuma at the time of the Battle of Leyte Gulf:
1. did she have spliter shields installed at her dual and triple 25mm AA mounts?
2. according to Lacroix & Wells she caried 23 single 25mm AA guns but there are only 21 shown in the Fujimi instructions (see http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10127304t2/60/2) - any idea about where the remaining 2 have been located?
2. did she carry all of her (8) boats into the battle?
3. did she carry the auxiliary rudder into the battle?

Aside from the photo below, I don't know of any other reasonably detailed image of her at that time. I can check Gakken #44.

thanks for your reply. I know this photo from L&W (where they even comment that it is not quite sure if this is from Samar and Chikuma), unfortunately it is not clear enough to give answers to my questions. I do not think I have seen any shots of Tone from this period so if you can chack Gakken for me it would be great! Or your good guess please...
BTW I was quite surprised with the main gun's blast bags colour on the Chikuma photo - I would suppose them to be darker (brownish) in Aug 1944 but they appear to be very light (white or natural). None of the other canvas parts (25mm gun tubs) seem to stand out so light so perhaps these were darker. And it also seems there are no canvas blast bags on the secondary 5-inch guns. Do you think I am right?
