I love looking at clean work like this, being a CVN helps. I have an Enterprise in the stash with a large amount of bits and bobs. This build has got me thinking about a long term background build on this one.
Thanks again for the comments and compliments!! Keeps me motivated to keep plugging along on this project, so thank you.

Hey Simon, the best I can tell you is I don't think they are elevators. I believe they are access panels for electrical or something else. I am not certain. Maybe someone else who served aboard a modern US carrier would be able to answer that. I included some photos of them to show their location and that they differ from an elevator. All the elevators have caution and warning lines painted around them, and these do not. Have a look.
Don't quote me on this but I "think" any elevators are required to have safety markings around them. In their case, I'd expect to see the red and yellow lines around their periphery. If not I'd say its safe to mark them off as access panels or the like. Can anyone confirm my theory?

Those are access covers to various systems on the 2nd deck below the hangar deck, they access system isolation valves. Although they are hardly ever opened. As well as some are access trunks to voids in the lower hull. They are tight and fun to get in. Now, there a two access covers in between ele. 3 an ele. 4 that are vertical convairors that carry food stores to the mess decks for storage. They are sometimes painted out with caution strips but sometimes are not. They also have a set of these forward in bay 1 near ele. 1 for the same purpose.
I have seen these covers outlined in white as well. All weapons elevators are painted out with red and yellow warning strips.
Hope this helps.

I knew you would have information on this! Thanks a bunch. It's great to have modelers that have expertise in these areas on this site to bounce questions off of. I really appreciate your reply and input. Thanks again Jim.
Just a quick update since I started on the hangar deck. I have built the basic structure for the Jet Engine Shop and am working on making everything fit. I won't be adding any detail inside the JES as you really wouldn't be able to see much once it was finished. I also have the wall sections figured out and one of them is in the photo. Nothing is really glued into place at the moment, I am still test fitting to make sure everything will work..........so far so good.
I have been working on reconstructing the hangar openings that I removed in the beginning of this build. I didn't like how thick the plastic was on the model and was the reason I removed them in the first place. I actually removed the upper portion of the opening (1st photo) as it made it easier to rebuild them. The rest of the photos show how I went about building them and then a few showing it completed. The internal openings will be the same.
Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas! I finally got around to it and started building the detail on the interior walls. Here are the weapons elevators that I have started on. I also have the fire wall doors mostly built and you can see one of them in the photos. There are still a couple of platforms to build that are aft of aircraft elevator 2 and forward of aircraft elevator 3. Just thought I would share some progress photos........
Thanks fellas! I built the two platforms that I had mentioned in the previous post and have a couple of photos to share. I probably won't add much more detail than what's there. There is definitely plenty more to add, but once the hangar is closed up, you will only be able to see certain detail and others you wouldn't so I have opted not to add it. However, I do plan on packing the detail in where you can see it! I also have a photo that shows a section of the hangar wall and can be added as an "insert". This will make it easier to build and detail sections of the hangar walls and then go back and paint them, before attaching. So far this has worked quite well as far as ease of construction.
Impressive! That hangar is a lot busier than the Nimitz class, with a lot more doo-dads and structures to add. Part of me is relieved that I did not have to do that to my CVNs and part of me is jealous that I did not have the opportunity to do all that to my CVNs!

Yeah, I partly agree with Ryan: I am glad I didn't have to do ALL this work to my Nimitz nevertheless, Doug: You are kicking the out of all Enterprises around the world!! Actually: all CVN-s. Super nice hangar too, dude! Let's make sure I don't enter my ship in the same contest as you
