Calling all Kriegsmarine U-boat Type IX fans

On schedule,several kits are available on the auction site,albeit with rather high shipping costs,and metal barrels and 'scopes are available as well,AM.
Here is a nice in box review with detailed sprue shots,giving a good idea of what is in the box.

The railing looks to be a rather delicate challenge,I would like to understand the moulding technique used for the various lower hull vent? openings,they just don't look right,unless intended for photoetch additions,or removal.Most all else looks pretty good.I would love to hear from folks with more Type IX knowledge,can some experts please give their assessments for us ?

It looks great. Im very excited about it, and have one on pre-order, but I just dont have it in me to drill out limber holes again. Mine will be straight out of the box. Unless blue ridge makes a pressure hull......

Somewhere I saw shots of first hull mouldings that show the area behind the limber holes as being quite thin,like maybe the job could be done with just sanding,as opposed to the TypeVII hull,which was a chore.Internally,cheat and use rolled up .010 Evergreen.You have got to really squint to see anything inside the holes,IMHO.

Suffice it to say, I'm limbering up by drilling and using sanding sticks and files to drill out the vents on this bad boy. I bought plastruct 1/16th I beams to simulate the deck supports that are visible trough the vents, and removed the molded in simulations the kit offered. The look is much better. The parts are very crisp, no flash to speak of, very detailed and all and all a pleasure to behold. The deck is nicely done, but there is no question in my military mind that James at Nautilus Models will have a replacement deck out as soon as he can get a kit in his hands for measurements etc. He also is considering a resin modification for model the cutaway XI C/40. Considering the below deck torpedo storage and the combination metal and wooden storage lockers on the deck and the rails for the tordpedo cart, a replacement deck is the ticket, IMHO.

I read some comments on the packaging being rough on the parts trees, but I have no damage whatsoever on any of the parts. So, I just have to get past the Holidays, and then jump on this kit.

Makes me wonder if there are any IX A B or C conversions planned. I would love to do U-123 during Operation Drumbeat. The book of the same title made me obsessed with the type IX.....

Type IX is here!!!! I've been waiting for this one for so long. My 1/72 subs are my favorites!! It is perfectly sized between the Gato and Type VII..

I just ordered the first PE set I've seen for the Revell IX C kit , set one of three from Eduard. Mainly hull fittings, forward structural internals around the tubes, and door details, flood vents, deck cleats, and some tower enhancements including FUMO 30, accurate footstands and grab rails in the tower, hatch and ammunition canister hardware. No word or hint of what's on the following two sets to be offered. Around $70 delivered to the USA.

Now if we can get a wooden or brass deck to go with the kit, it will be a Happy New Year.

The picture I posted is a ROG kit, with Oto's deck with a type 21 behind it. to builds RC ballast tanks and drive systems, and offers one for the IXC kit.

I'm wondering if anyone might know someone making this type of ship fitting? Its a shackle with a bolt closure, through the deck fitting, a open ended turnbuckle at each end, a wire thimble with the single steel jumper cable that runs up to harness that then splits in to three the front of the tower. On the U-505, it actually splits into two tension wires that replicate the attachment hardware, shackle, turnbuckle, thimbled cable up to the attachment point on the tower side. The aft jumper cables begin on the aft wintergarten top rail attachment brackets, again with shackle, turnbuckle, thimbled cable, and run to the stern deck casing, over the stern support frames.

The kit supplies nothing, nada for running these cables and expect the builder to use a knot to secure the cotton line. That, IMHO sucks. So anyone got a source? I do have some brass turnbuckles for a model ship fitter in Great Britain, and I have 0.3MM braided wire for the cables, but the problem are miniature shackles and thimbles and turnbuckles with threaded bolt fittings to secure to the shackles. The jumper cables require eight sets of this hardware (seven if you use only two attachment points on the tower). Anyone got any ideas?

What about 1/72 armor accessories? I know in 1/35 there are lots of cables, turnbuckles with threaded bolts and other such items.
