Re: Calling all HMS "Mighty" Hood fans
Question about the AOTS Hood in regards to its coverage of how she looked in the mid 1930s. I'm interested in building her somewhere in the 1935-1938 time frame. If the book doesn't cover that period very well can you suggest where else to look please?

HMS Hood Admirals Barge (as sunk)
Hello. We're finishing up a 1/192 build of the HMS Hood as sunk and a question from my builder came up regarding finding references to the design or links to pictures of her admirals barge at that time. Are there pictures or research available that might provide some insight on this small but important detail?
Many thanks. Matt

Re: Calling all HMS "Mighty" Hood fans
Very few images exist that show the Admiral's barge; the ones I found I put in the composite below.
This barge appears to be a variation on the normal 35ft Fast Motor Boat that was carried by cruisers and capital ships around the start of WWII. The barge differs from the normal fast motor boat by having an enclosed pilot position and a rear cabin with two windows (instead of one).
I found this image later; this is a Royal Barge that looks much like the Admiral's Barge carried on board HMS Hood. I have modeled my Admirals barge on these photographs years ago but as they are not finished they were never put on my blog. I do think I pinned this elusive boat down; the one that proves more difficult is the motorized 42ft barge. I have no footage but modeled it after the 45ft barge. Hope this helps!
The barge as an Admiral's Barge in the post by GMG4RWF had been removed from HMS Hood by the time of her sinking as were all other 50ft steam pinnaces. Edit: Post edited by GMG4RWF but still showing the wrong boat.

Re: Calling all HMS "Mighty" Hood fans
I was just wondering who has the more accurate size main turrets? Trumpeter or Tamiya? I have both 1/700 kits, and was going to use one of the spares from my trumpeter kit for a missing one from the Tamiya kit. Thats when I found out the Trumpeter turrets were alot smaller.....
Thanks

Re: Calling all HMS "Mighty" Hood fans
Hi all,
because my Repulse is near to the finish line, I will start after with my 1/350 HMS Hood. Unfortunately the LR set is not further available as I had to learn, the only alternative on current market is the WEM PE set + the Resin turret replacements as far as I know or alternatively the Eduard set.
I will not make out of here a nearly scratch builduing issue as EJFoeth does with his excellent building, but only some of the more or less necessary corrections here and there and maybe other replacements. I have read this thread here + many other threads and building reports and got a lot of more knowledge ...
So my question is at least, because still unclear:
a) Do I need both PE sets from WEM and Eduard, because something important is in one set missing what other does deliver?
b) Is there anything else necessary or recommended to buy from after market maybe?
Cheers,
Christian

Hi Christian,
Please also note that a new set from the Chinese company Big Blue Boy has been recently released. The company is a sponsor of this site and the set is shown in their post somewhere in the Manufacturers sub-forum. Our fellow MW member PetrOs has also announced that his company is becoming the importer of Big Blue Boy sets in Germany.
One more choice for you. Worth a look, I think!
Hope this helps,
Anthony

I am going to build the 1/200 Hachette HMS Hood, but are missing a few issues. The missing issues are 11,22,72,93,94 and 95. Does anyone have these issues to sell me ?

All those issues apart from no 22 are listed on the Hachette website as available to purchase - if you are not already subscribing, you may need to contact Hachette by phone. No 22 is mainly planks apart from two pieces of thin ply which shouldn't be too difficult to copy if you ask someone on the Partworks forum to photocopy the shape.Oterlia wrote:The missing issues are 11,22,72,93,94 and 95. Thanks for the answer Francis. I did contact the Hachette, but since they don't send to other coutries than Great Britann and e few other contries, I can not get hold of them that way. I live in Norway.

Trumpeter 1/200 HMS Hood
Hello, over a month ago Trumpeter listed 1/200 HMS Hood in one of their preview releases. I just went through their site looking for a update and could not find it list anymore. I even went through this thread to see if anything was being discussed; nothing. Did I dream seeing this proposed kit or was it proposed and Trumpeter removed it because they decided not to go ahead with it?
Can anyone shed some light on this?
Thank you.

I've heard the rumors they were very much working on a 1:200 Hood model but that's about it.

Re: Calling all HMS "Mighty" Hood fans
When posting in CASF, please use the "New Reply" rather than the "New Topic" button so the question remains inside the existing thread (if it exists, of course) - thanks!
As for the kit: Trumpeter does not post their upcoming releases on their site until it's the month or two before it's ready for release. In the meanwhile, mentions of upcoming kits are in their catelogue (as posted by Oterlia) and Steven's International (their North American distributor - link is on the site's front page). If there's any update (such as pre-orders available), I'll include it as a link in my Upcoming Releases thread on the Main Forum.

Re: Calling all HMS "Mighty" Hood fans
A couple of Hood and general battle-cruiser questions. First; why is Hood forum under 'Battleships'? Gasp!! Blasphemy!!
Secondly; Hood, Repulse, and Renown were the only surviving battle-cruisers during the inter-war years. All received miscellaneous refits and rebuilds, but as Repulse and Renown, in particular, received thicker armoured decks, wouldn't that have elevated them to the status of 'Battleship'? They each had new deck armour equal to, or greater, than contemporary battleships such as Nelson class and KGV class. Now to Hood: I've read that since Hood was already at her maximum displacement, no further weight (armour) could be added without subtracting an equal weight somewhere else - so no additional deck armour. Why did that not also apply to Repulse and Renown? It doesn't appear that the refits and alterations to these two ships would have equaled a couple thousand tons of deck armour.

Re: Calling all HMS "Mighty" Hood fans
I have now managed to get hold of all Hachette HMS Hood issues exept issue 11. This issue containes only wood, so it shall not be that hard to make. But if somebody have issue 11, I would appretiate if they could scan the pages and email me.FrancisMcN wrote:All those issues apart from no 22 are listed on the Hachette website as available to purchase - if you are not already subscribing, you may need to contact Hachette by phone. It'd be funny if the description for CASF/Battleships didn't already explicitly say "Battleships and Battlecruisers of all nations and eras.biggles2 wrote: First; why is Hood forum under 'Battleships'? Gasp!! Blasphemy!!![]()
