1/700 Diorama - 70 year anniversary of "Operation Hailstone"

Post by Hen »

Hey folks,

I built a 1/700 diorama of the Japanese base at Truk for modellmarine.de - some of you might be interested

All pictures and the full article (in German) here:

Excellent diorama! Which part of Truk anchorage is it supposed to be? Moen? Dublon?

the calm before the storm...
"Haijun" means "navy" in Mandarin Chinese.

Thank you! It's no special part of the lagoon - the landscape is more or less fictional. Dublon, Fefan or Moen islands would be the size of my flat in this scale  but a second part including an air strip and more infrastructure is in the making right now.

As the Akashi has a prominent place in my dio, I'd say it's the repair anchorage next to Dublon :heh:

OUTSTANDING!!! Very nice job sir!

Only suggestion I could make would to be fade the wakes of the underway vessels into the sea a little more and that's just nitpicking :thumbs_up_1: Please post progress shots of this "second part" over here. I for one would love to see the creation process.

Thank you, Cliffy!
FYI - nothing on this diorama is fixed, everything can be moved and changed :)
Tthe wakes of moving vessels are simple clear plastic foil cut to stripes and painted with a big dry brush. That's why I can't make them look more realistic ;)

I really appreciate that, Jim!! I'm always following your naval base as I want to do something like that as soon as I move to my new place... I'd love to build a Kure or Sasebo dio :thumbs_up_1: in the meantime I'm building up the "Nihon Kaigun" in her full strength, the project is pretty similar to yours - all classes, all ships (if somehow available). I'm past 300 ships and haven't counted them in a while...

I'll keep you guys updated on part 2 of the Truk base!

Hey fellaz,

I just wanted to give a short update to show you that I haven't been asleep :wave_1:
Got caught up in a few smaller builds, guess y'all know what I mean...

These are the doomed ships for part 2 that I'm working on at the moment:

Aikoku Maru (Pit-Road)
Tonan Maru (Loose Cannon)
Shinkoku Maru (Fujimi)
Oite (Pit-Road)

I also found a nice picture of the airbase on Eten island - looks pretty much like what I already startet with... so with a little rework this could come out nearly historically correct :thumbs_up_1:

Happy modeling!

This might help. I think it came from Pacificwrecks.com, but not sure.

Wow that is nice. Love the landscape. Stuff like this is the most enjoyable part of modeling.

1/350 Dunkerque
1/350 Shimakaze
1/350 Sharnhorst Dragon

Happy 72nd anniversary to "Operation Hailstone" :thumbs_up_1:

I haven't made any efforts on Eten Island, but I finished AMC Aikoku Maru, AO Shinkoku Maru, CL Katori and DD Oite. AO Tonan Maru and AMC Akagi Maru are almost done and I found another freighter which fits the dio; Reiyo Maru can be made out of BFMs Quiststock...
