My other modelling passion beside ships, military in 1/87

Post by Christian M. »

Hello,

Beside ships in scale 1/350, my passion in modelling is armor in scale 1/87 (H0) and here I nearly finished last year a bigger diorama.
The diorama shows a scenario next to Berlin in March 1945 with some mixed German Forces on the way to the area of operations with the chaotic mix to use what was left available.
As hard as Berlin was bombed by allied Air Forces, the smaller cities like Potsdam next to Berlin were until March / April 1945 nearly un-bombed beside some miss- or emergency drops. But even after becoming a target, the destructions were in comparison to most other cities harmless one of the reasons why Potsdam was chosen to become the location for the meeting of Stalin, Truman and Churchill later.

The tanks and vehicles are all from Herpa (ex Rocco Minitanks) and Trident, all upgraded with things from aftermarket and scratch building. Figures are all from Preiser an hand painted by me with some modifications and re-modelling. The tram was a cheap 5,00 EUR toy I found by chance and which I over worked too and repainted in correct color.
The houses etc. are all from modelling railway aftermarket and overhauled too. The road is hand made.

Some datas:
Building time: 1.5 years (some rest has to be finished) with usual evening and week end working for some hours
Size: 80 x 40 cm
Figures: 148

One of the 2 Henschel 33 towing 8.8cm guns from Berlin air defense forces. The German Forces were of course clear inferior and at artillery in special. Out of this the AA guns which defended Berlin were brought into action and towed by whatever was left and able to do. These guns were in majority manned with teenagers and older / out of earlier wounding restricted useable air force personal.

The Bergepanther is a heavy rebuilding on base of a normal Panther model from Trident.

One of the 2 Tiger II Bs of sSSPzAbt. 502 (heavy SS tank battalion), Figures are Preiser and hand painted. They were both overworked and more detailed with PE parts and scratch building. The Kursk sign on them is correct and proofed by pictures. Battle of Berlin is a core point of my interest since a decade and when I have back my book and documents from a friend to whom I borrowed things for his project, I can even give names of the crew of both tanks.

Superb work, particularly well done in that small scale.

I wish I could put the same kind of detail into 1/35 scale as you put into 1/87...

Thank you very much guys ... :wave_1:

@ Goodwood
I restarted modeling about 3 years back after a total break of 6 years after marriage and 2 sons who need my attention and other issues. Before that I made 1/35 extensively too and I was travelling many times a year with the modeling club where I'm member from exposition to exposition.
After I restarted modeling, I had no real desire to make 1/35 further, but more to start ships now. But because armor is still one of my passions, I chose 1/87 (H0).

It is really amazing how detailed these small models and kits are or what can be done out of them with these some available aftermarket things and scratch building. In sum it is only a question of craftsmanship and only small limitations to make a model same way detailed as a 1/35 model. Also, the Preiser figures (and some few other manufactures) are so well done in a same quality like those 1/35 figures from Dragon or Tamiya in detail.

However,
my next 1/87 diorama project is in his last few points of final planning and will start after my current SMS Markgraf is ready. I need some break from ships and because such a diorama needs minimum a year of building time, it will be a good long time project as alternation beside ships.
This time diorama will be with US Army during the last weeks of WW-2 somewhere in Germany on the way to victory.

Because this is a ship modeling only forum, I can't post work in progress about here ... but maybe in another forum I will do.

Cheers,
Christian
