Last major overhaul the Intrepid had was 1965, so all that should be needed to release the kit in earlier Vietnam or the latter ASW configurations is the relevant airwings

I may go for Her first Vietnam tour 1966, A-1H/J, A-4B, EA-1F and UH-2

Happy Modeling

Looks nice in general.

Although I loathe early moaners, I wish the aircraft sprues looked a little better.
From what I can see in the line drawings they could 'almost' be 700 scale. I assume clear plastic thoughout.
In this day and age, grey plastic with separate clear canopies should be the minimum starting block for 350 scale, as there is some much more that could be done with them.

Liking carriers as I do, the ship and the airwing are just as important as each other.

Having said that, I'll still be in for the kit :thumbs_up_1:

Once they got the 27A or 27C mods they became more or less alike. The 27C's brought the starboard elevator to the table. After the SCB-125 mods, which was the Hurricane Bow,Angle Deck, and a few other things, there were essentially 4 flavors of them:

1) Intrepid, Ticonderoga, Hancock....SCB-27C to SCB-125

2) Lexington, Bon Homme Richard, Shangri La...These three never were 27C as such. They went from the WWII config to the SCB-27C/SCB-125 config which is why they don't look like the other 3 SCB-27C's.

3) Essex, Yorktown, Hornet, Randolph, Wasp, Bennington, Kearsarge....SCB-27A to SCB-125

4) Oriskany....SCB-27A to SCB-125A .......Oriskany was the only 27A to get the Steam catapults which is why she got the 125A designation.

There were also numerous mods with regard to antenna's, radars, 5" guns that were retained and a few other details depending on what year.

I am pretty excited about having the E-1 Tracers. Thanks for the preview. It looks good at a glance.

The Length was made the same, however, there are some subtle differences in curves on a couple of them and there is a flat nose version and round nose version.

Some had the port bow anchor moved to the stem.
Some had a rectangular forward elevator to the end, while others had the forward elevator altered to have a pointed forward edge.
A few had the aft elevator moved farther aft and the crane installed in front of the elevator.
Some have small Jet Blast deflectors, others have the newer larger ones.
Some had bridle catchers installed at the bow, some didn't.
The Flight decks also had minor shape differences.

There are as many variations as there are ships!!!

From what I have been able to find, it appears that INTREPID is the only 27C that received the 144 ASW mods, making her unique. TICONDEROGA and HANCOCK are the two closest matches and they both will need the bow stem anchor moved.

You could make pretty much any angled deck ESSEX from this kit, however, some will require more modifications than others.

Here are the major differences I have found. Remember, the ships changed a lot during their lives. This list is their final configuration. It also doesn't include Radars, weapons or aircraft.

These ships had SCB-27C
They all had Pointed forward elevators and Bridle Catchers later in life.

CV-11 INTREPID SCB-125/144
Flat Bow
Bow Anchor
Small Jet Blast Defl
Stbd Elev further aft
Stbd Crane fwd elev

CV-14 TICONDEROGA SCB-125

CV-16 LEXINGTON SCB-125

CV-19 HANCOCK SCB-125

CV-31 BON HOMME RICHARD SCB-125

CV-34 ORISKANY SCB-125A

CV-38 SHANGRI LA SCB-125

Small Jet Blast Defl

These ships had SCB-27A/125/144
They all have Bow Stem Anchors (Except YORKTOWN)
They all have Rectangular forward elevators.

CV-9 ESSEX Smooth Bow
CV-10 YORKTOWN Smooth Bow
CV-12 HORNET Flat Bow
CV-15 RANDOLPH Smooth Bow

Hello Mardis,

Shangri La kept her wooden deck throughout her life.

Where did you get the Willy Fudds from, are they conversions of the Tamiya Hawkeyes? Very nice models!

From what I remember the last time I was aboard Intrepid they put steel down on all the flightdeck and covered her last remaining wood deck. Maybe they pulled the wood up first, not sure but i do remember the steel plates everywhere.

Looks like the kit has an all steel flightdeck. Gonna see if it's possible to scribe the wood deck. Well yes it is possible but is it worth while, I think so. I'll see once the kit is in hand.

I want to do Hancock, so I'll need to come up with a deck solution anyway.....maybe I should scan a bunch of photos for Pontos on my next trip to NARA II
