Re: Calling all USS Enterprise CVN-65 fans
-Based upon my research & all the pics I have, the answer is no(but I could be wrong...). Enterprise never received a MK-29 Sea Sparrow launcher on the starboard sponson. But, during a yard period sometime between 2004-2005, she did get a RAM system on that sponson. Pic of the RAM I've attached, was taken while attending Inactivation week back in late 2012...

Also note how many triple life raft can holders there are in the late Enterprise fit (post 2010 fit).wvtomcat65 wrote:-Based upon my research & all the pics I have, the answer is no(but I could be wrong...). Re: Calling all USS Enterprise CVN-65 fans
Hey Brian001, here is an un-dated photo of the starboard side from the stern looking toward the bow. The red arrow is pointing at the radar at the aft of the island. Those radar were not added until 1995. The yellow arrows are pointing at the chaff dispensers on the aft starboard sponson, which were still there at the time of this photo and had not been removed yet. I'm thinking those were probably there in 1996. I know the photo is prior to 1999 because in the original photo, one of the radars that was added in 1999 to the stern of the ship is not there in this photo. I think you would probably be correct in adding the chaff dispensers for the 1996 time frame to that area. Hope this helps.Brian001 wrote:Hi Guys, Looking for some help.
Currently doing research for my 1996 Enterprise, and I need some clarification on the aft, starboard sponson. (forgive me if I didn't get that right - I'm new to ship building).![]()
Bert Kinzey's book suggests that the chaff launchers shown in D&S 39 were to be replaced with a Sea Sparrow launchers during a 1990-93 refit.
I have not found any info to suggest that this occurred, did the chaff launchers remain in place during 96?
Any info would be appreciated as well pictures if you are willing to share.
Thanks,
Doug

Re: Calling all USS Enterprise CVN-65 fans
Hey Medic08,
I guess your answer depends on what time frame you are modeling your Enterprise. Also, how accurate you are wanting to be. I have seen photos prior to 2001 for Enterprise with the deck tractors numbered. At about 1999 and later the deck tractors do not seem to be numbered on their tops like in previous years. However, I have seen photos from later time periods (not necessarily Enterprise) with the deck tractors numbered again. Since I am building my Enterprise for the 2001 time frame, my deck tractors will not be numbered. Again, it all depends on what you are wanting. If you are wanting your deck tractors numbered, you would probably be good to number them starting at "1A", "2A", "3A", "4A" and so on.....if you wish to switch it up, go to "1B", "2B", "3B".....or "1C", "2C"..... or just whole numbers, 1, 2, 3, 4..... or mix it up, it's up to you. Hope this helps.

Thanks Doug that what I thought but just wanted to be sure. Kinda going for the 1996 time frame with the last intruder cruise. But there will be some things that are not time accurate but I like some of the late updates so they are getting added

I didn't find any information about the cvw 8 during the 2001 cruise. I now what aircraft and what squadrons was active, but does someone have information on how many AC per squadron and their modex numbers? Thanks, Sandro

I think that's kind of open end of research
But you definitly has to put some of your AC into the hangar...

Re: Calling all USS Enterprise CVN-65 fans
Some more question regarding the big lady during the 2001 cruise. Was there some major refitment after that time until today? I have some good HD footage on youtube showing the ship during 2013 I think, so I'm asking if I could use that as reference.
Also, what about the tractors and deck vehicles on board during the 2001? Would JAG and Black dog resin work for that time frame?
Is there an approximate count of how many vehicles there was, and how many of each?
I've heard, as an example, that the spotting dollies can be found only in the hangar bay since they move the AC in and out of the hangar, is that true? And are there any other similar cases with fire trucks, cranes, tractors? Where are they usually parked, and their job...
Sorry for that many question, but I'm a detail freak, and I love to know the ship better before I build them. Thanks,
Sandro

Re: Calling all USS Enterprise CVN-65 fans
Hey Sandro,
There are several differences from the 2001 timeframe to 2013. Several radars were added and upgraded as well the radars dome shape changes. Some weapons upgrades were added during later timeframes as well. You could still use the youtube video for reference but you may want to research a little more prior to making changes if your wanting to bring your build to the 2001 timeframe.
As far as the deck tractors, both sets from Blackdog and JAG are fine for 2001, but be forewarned that they are different sizes. I wouldn't pose the deck tractors from each brand next to each other if you end up using them both. I opted to use the deck tractors from Blackdog because of their excellent detail and I used every vehicle from the JAG set except for the deck tractors. If you are wanting a full compliment of deck equipment, I would suggest both, but that's just my suggestion. I have yet to come across information that shows what deck vehicles and how many of each were aboard during the 2001 cruise. My best suggestion would be to study flight deck photos to see how many deck vehicles you can count at any one time. And you are correct about the spotting dollies only being used in the hangar. They were meant to be low profile to get around in tight spaces as needed. Generally, deck vehicles are parked by the island when not in use or in the hangar deck, again as needed. Some can be found parked around the deck as well, it just depends on what's going on at the time. As far as uses, the fire trucks are of course used to fight fires and for emergencies, deck tractors have various uses, mainly moving aircraft but also some provide engine starts and various other jobs. I hope this helps to answer some of your questions.

Sure it does Doug! Thanks.
I've ordered yesterday the Black dog and will get the Jag too. Also I'm waiting fir the Boatswainmodel ship decals to be released.
I will make more research for sure, and use a lot of your photos as reference
you are the main inspiration for this project.
Do you know where Patrice is? The guy that did the hangar decals. I have the ones released in 2012, he did some upgrades to it that I would like to purchase

Unfortunately I do not know of Patrice's whereabouts. Also, JAG sold their company and the name of the company has changed to Admiralty Model Works.

Hangar
I pulled out my 1:350 Tamiya Enterprise. I was thinking the Hangar Deck might be a good project for the 3D printer.
All the pictures I see (and book descriptions say) have the hangar as rectangular. However, the kit's foremost and aftmost doors are not parallel to the centerline.
Is the kit accurate in this respect? IF so, is the space between the oval opening different fore and aft? Or i stye hangar tapered?
If the kit is not accurate, I would compromise.
Does anyone know how much space there is between the two openings?
Finally, any accurate measurements would be appreciated.
