1/700 USS Hornet CV-8

Just a shot for fun. I made a "hybrid" Oerlikon 20mm The PE gun and shield come from the WEM set. The pedestal from the kit. I wanted at least the pedestal to have the 3D look. The second shot is from the gun next to a MM paint bottle for scale comparison. (now I have to make 30 of them.... )

Small update, the AA guns for the Hornet are assembled and ready to be painted. These parts really took me a while to build.

The 20mm Oerlikons are a combination of WEM PE and the pedestal from the kit.

The 1.1" quads were made with the WEM PE set. These guns were for me the most difficult thing in PE I have done (6 parts each gun). I just realized after taking a close-up picture that the magazines are not perfectly aligned. I have yet to decide if it is really worth it to fix them up.

The 5 inch guns were made with Niko Models 5"/38 Mk.24 and Master Model brass barrels

Next step is finally gluing the airplanes in the hangar deck and fix the flight deck.

So I placed some airplanes in the hangar deck. I added also some small details to it and I think I am ready to fix the flight deck to it.

A close up just for fun, you can see all the mistakes and grubby finish with this one...

Next, the catwalks and other small details like bollards, life rafts, etc.

Hi everyone,

I added some small details and railings, I really had trouble with the ladders, trying to emulate the clean work of the people in this forum.

And a mock-up picture for fun. (I really like the shape of the Yorktown Class hull, I hope I captured the shape at least a little)

Sorry for the quality of the pictures, it doesn't look so grubby from normal viewing distance.

Looking good. Some of those bends in the railings were hard enough in 1/350. I think you managed it well in a smaller scale.

Hi everyone,

I fixed the flight deck in place and added some more small details. The catwalks took me a while and a lot of effort to align. The thin perforated PE ones are really worth the effort (USN Carrier catwalks from Lionroar). I added more ladders using pictures and the CV-5 plans as reference. The cranes and liferafts were also added.

I am one of those that like to paint PE before attaching it. Maybe on my next build I will try all assembly first and then paint. I can see the advantages with that technique.

I have been obsessing about the 1.1" quads after seeing Marijn van Gils work. I decided then to redo mine (they were poorly aligned and had some glue blobs). First i disassembled the ones I had (under a flame, I got the trick on some thread here). These are from WEM and each gun is 6 parts. I could get the ones from Flyhawk or Fine Molds but I wanted to give these another try.

I also tried to layer some paint on them to reduce the flatness. I am a bit more satisfied with this ones.

Great build Hypno7, and excellent 1.1" guns!

They look more 3D than the Flyhawk ones. Next to the paint you applied, the fact that the PE-pieces of the barrels are "upright" makes them look more 3D, and I also like how the seats attach. Now I wish I had found these from WEM before, but the Flyhawk ones will do now for me...

I also thought about the Niko 5" guns, but it was a bit late and the Trumpeter parts are quite good. Still these look nicer, especially the breaches... Maybe you can still attach PE railing for even more detail? This was in my GMM PE set for Lexington, isn't it in the set for Hornet?

I loved the Master models barrels! They must be the smallest turned barrels I've ever seen (being more used to 1/35th armour models!), and they were much easier to work with than I expected.

Thank you for the comment Marijn! The 1.1" guns have to be the most difficult thing I have ever done with PE. The WEM ones are a bit more detailed with the separate seat supports and the cooling hoses, but I think I spent too much time on them.

Interesting to see that the quality of the Lexington kit seems a lot better than the Hornet. These are the 1.1" that come with the Hornet kit.

The 5 inch guns seem to be the same, but I got lazy and took the easy way out with the Niko ones. I attached the PE railing too, the WEM set for the Hornet/Enterprise (for the Tamiya kit) has the gun mount, the fuze setter, and the railings, I only ended up using the railings. You are absolutely right, those Master Barrels are really impressive, I got a small stash of them since I plan to build more of the USN.

Here is a comparison with the kit part, lazy me, as there is room for improvement.
